What were the ways that jesus said to act with your parents?Did Jesus say that we are to love hounor and respect are parents.Did Jesus have any specific teaching that told the people how to look after there parents and how to treat them!.In the old testament the people were told to think and act highly in regard to there parents and to hounor and obey them. And to look after them in old age.I cant really see anything in the New testament saying anything like the old testament about this.I know the commandment covers honour your father and mother. But iam really searching to see what was Jesus ideas and veiws on family life and parents?.Did Jesus give examples on such ways of acting? Is looking after your own family a big must do in the eyes of Jesus and does it please Jesus if a person takes care of there parents in old age.

Thank you,🙂

When Jesus said to hate your parents. Was that meant to be taken as it was said or is it another meaning?Does Jesus want us to hate are parents??Iam a little confussed about this!!
As christians and catholics are we told by Jesus to respect older people in the same way we respect our parents? If a christian was to respect and care for older people as well as respecting and caring for his parents would he be rewarded in heaven and would he be good in Jesus eyes??? Another thing i wonder also is when Jesus said to hate your siblings, children, spouse, parents, how can you really hate them even if they do not believe in Jesus.Should we not be forcefull in that situation and keep trying to convert, spouse, children, siblings, parents.Would it not be a reasonable thing to say that one day when you die that your spouse, siblings, parents, children would walk hand in hand in heaven with Jesus Christ.

Jesus did not come to overtrow the Law but to fulfill it, to perfect it if you will,
The 10 commands which Jesus resumed in 2 are still perfectly valid.
Jesus said to help the poor if you help the least of people you are also doing to Him.
Would that somehow reduce your duty towards your parents?

Reflect on it, you are commanded to help a stranger how much more are you to care for your mother and father in their old age when they cannot fend for themselves?

Children, obey your parents (in the Lord), for this is right. “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise, “that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life on earth.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up with the training and instruction of the Lord. Slaves, be obedient to your human masters with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ, not only when being watched, as currying favor, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, willingly serving the Lord and not human beings, knowing that each will be requited from the Lord for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free. Masters, act in the same way toward them, and stop bullying, knowing that both they and you have a Master in heaven and that with him there is no partiality.

Letter to the Ephesians 6:1-9.

agreeing with jerryz …
“love God with all your heart and soul and your neighbor as yourself”

love God…first, last and in between… love God more than spouse,
parents, and children. doing that first and foremost is stepping into the “path” of Jesus…
and taking on His love for all other people. i think you will find that it is very hard to do…
but once you are there your love, which is His love…will open doors you and i cannot imagine or express. it is the road to being “Christlike”.
remember also that Jesus kept a private life for 30 years, probably helping His parents. as pope john XXIII says in his book…“the journey of a soul”…how much
humility he showed to Mary and Joseph…and to us.
and please remember also that God does not make mistakes. we may not
always understand because of our limited intelligence…"…and if we did understand He
would not be God. " i think bishop sheen said that

Example: At the foot of the cross, he entrusted His Mother into the care of St. John. It was His last act. He also cured St. Peter’s mother-in-law. He didn’t tell St. Peter that he had no obligation to her. He did have an obligation to help his wife help her parent.

Would you seriously think that He’d give a pass on taking care of one’s parents? You have a moral obligation to all. Christ’s commandments were to love God above all and to love your neighbor as yourself. These are pro active commandments but by no means eradicates any of the original 10 Commandments…ever.

Where did He say that? Are you referring to where He instructs you to foresake all and follow Him? If you are called to a religious life or called to convert, you must follow Him over the protests surrounding you.

CatholicSaint, I believe you’re referring to passages such as these.

*Luke 14:26 “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.”

Matthew 10: 34-39 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it."

Mark 3:31-35 "Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came. They stood outside and sent a person in to tell Jesus to come out. Many people were sitting around Jesus. They said to him, “Your mother and brothers are waiting for you outside.” Jesus asked, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” Then Jesus looked at those people sitting around him. He said, “These people are my mother and my brothers! My true brother and sister and mother are those people that do the things God wants.”*

From my understanding, this is a blunt reminder that if you are to be a Christian, Jesus Christ takes precedence over all other people in your life. You must accept that your spouse or your parents or your children may not approve.

You have to remember the times in which these were written, too. If you think Saul of Tarsus was the only Jew persecuting those who now followed the Christ, you would be sorely mistaken. Former Gentiles and Jews often had to make the sad choice between accepting Jesus Christ or staying in good standing with their family. It is by the grace of God so many had the strength to choose truth.

Jesus and the writers of the Gospels are not telling you to hate your birth family. It is more a warning that someday you may have to choose between what you know is right and what your family does or wants you to do.

Hope this helps.

Yep. μισέω can be translated ‘hate’, or more appropriately here, ‘despise’ / ‘disfavor’ / ‘disregard’. In other words, Christ should have first priority. However, this doesn’t mean that, in favoring Christ over others, you should ignore or treat them badly: you need to love Christ and your family.
You must accept that your spouse or your parents or your children may not approve.

Jesus specifically castigated those who refused help to their parents in the name of using it for God in the temple.

Mark 7:9-14, He went on to say, “How well you have set aside the commandment of God in order to uphold your tradition! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and ‘Whoever curses father or mother shall die. Yet you say, ‘If a person says to father or mother, “Any support you might have had from me is qorban”’ (meaning, dedicated to God), you allow him to do nothing more for his father or mother. You nullify the word of God in favor of your tradition that you have handed on. And you do many such things.”

Jesus loved His mother so much that He couldn’t say no to her even when He wasn’t ready to do what she wanted, as shown at the wedding at Cana. Also, as He was dying on the cross, Jesus cared enough about His mother to put her in the care of St. John. In heaven He crowned her Queen. He followed the Commandments, but He didn’t act out of obligation. He acted out of love for His Mother. He made a good sermon on how to treat one’s family – not with words, but by example.

Jesus tells us that what we do to or for another, we do unto Him. This is one of the most beautiful excerpts that I have read in a long time on the subject.
The love of agape is an open circle: it comes from God and returns to Him, but passes through one’s neighbor. Jesus himself inaugurated this new kind of love: “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you” (John 15:9).

St. Catherine of Siena gave the simplest and most convincing explanation of the reason for this. She puts these words into God’s mouth: "I ask you to love me with the same love with which I love you. But this you cannot do for me, because I have loved you without being loved. All the love you have for me is a love of debt, not of grace, in as much as you are obliged to do it, while I love you with the love of grace, not of debt.

Hence, you cannot give me the love that I require. Because of this I have placed your neighbor alongside you: so that you may do to him what you cannot do for me, that is, love him without considering whether he deserves it, and without expecting anything in return.** And I consider as done to me what you did to him."**
