What exactly did Jesus mean by this?

does he mean that those in His Church will be hated by the whole world??

or – and/or – does he mean it literally… that even people in your family and your so-called friends will hate you when you are too devout?? Can anyone BE too devout??? i don’t think so…

in any case, everyone hates me so i must be doing things right…

I think he means that the truth of God will always make men uncomfortable. It’s like a mirror reflecting all of our (and I mean all of ours, mine included) sin, immorality and all the other ways we don’t measure up to God back at us.

Some of us look at this reflection and think to our selves “Wow, I should be better than that! I should try harder!”, these people typically become good Christians. Unfortunetly all to many people out there and say “wow, I don’t like that reflection. I think I’ll just smash the mirror so I don’t have to look at it”.

I think that’s what Jesus meant. If you’re in group A, then you become a part (no matter how small and seemingly insignificant) of that greater mirror. Most people would rather smash it so they don’t have to look at their own failings, rather than try to become their own humble peice of the puzzel.

I’m not supprised you’re having issues with your friends on these issues, on the bright side I’ve also heard that particularly the younger generation (younger than I) is starting to again, more seriously accept faith. I hope the trend continues.

Also, one thing I don’t get why people say we worship Mary and the Saints. They are barely even mentioned in the Mass. The only time the Saints or Mary are mentioned is sometimes in the Priest’s homily and during the consecration (“For ourselves, too, we ask that some share in the fellowship of your apostles and martyrs, with John the Baptist, Stephen, Matthias,) etc.” Or unless it’s a Solemnity like All Saints Day, Immaculate Conception, or Assumption.

And on the other side, the Athiests identify us as being the epitomy of Christian, and in many cases mistakenly beleive that we beleive everything the literealists believe. It even gets into our influences in popular media. Here’s one small example,

Not sure if anyone else here is a fan of Sci-Fi’s Battle Star Galactica reboot, if you are then you know that this is a TV show extrodenarly rooted in the Orthodox understanding of God. You’d have to be a Catholic, or possibly E. Orthodox at least to really understand where Ron More is coming from with his running plot line. So the word got out that Battle Star Galactica is extrodenarly rooted in “Christianity”, a lot of people on my high def forum started watching the end of the show with trepidation.

Then they were all shocked when the end of the show came. There were a slew of comments of “wow, that’s not what I was expecting. I didn’t see anything evangelical there”.

Yes exactly, BSG is in no way Evangalical. It is revelation, with some Exodus mixed in, but it is in no way Evangelical. No rapture, nothing like that.

I’m not endorsing you go out, buy the complete series, and start showing it to your young childeren. Its a very adult show, which shows very adult things like allusions to varios sex acts, horrid voilence (including sucidie bombings) and a host of other dark idea’s. wow!! i really needed to read this… never thoiught of it exactly like that before… but i believe this is totally true…

i feel pretty smashed sometimes…

i accidentally stepped on a big beetle-looking bug the other day… Grossed me OUT!!! :hypno: but not long afterwards, i had one of those moments you refer to… or so it seems…where i felt someone was tyrin to get me (with no reason… no legit reason) so maybe God was trying to warn me with the bug thing… 'cause i began to kinda empathize with the poor thing…

on the other hand, when i stepped on it, i wondered if God was trying to tell me that this good (but very uncomfortable) act of mine had squashed satan somehow…

could be both, huh?

yeah, for sure… i’ve hd this thought… It’s not like at the altar for all to see is a statute of Mary… No, we have the crucifix… but then that’s not right either because it shows we just
want to keep Jesus on the Cross suffering…

we Catholics can’t win for losing… but some of “us” seem to try… always trying to appease the wrath of the protestaants…or at least their displeasure… by… uh… wel, i am thinking of preists who always want to sound so ecumenical to the point of not even being Catholic, it seems… i’ve seen a lot off that lately

The hated ones are the true believers. As the true believers are no longer under the wrath of God because they have recieved a new resurrected soul, and this being the case, the true believer will be hated because of the understanding and knowledge, while the unsaved will have no idea what the truth really is.

They are hated because they speak truth, and the truth of the true believer is different from the truth of the unsaved, as the word of God is a sword, a sword of truth, and the sword is life unto life and death unto death. The truth of the sword will cut those deeply as their own beliefs and understandings will be debased and shown for what it really is, false.

However they still feel they are right, and so those in the dark will be at war and emnity with those in the light. The sword cuts those who lack understanding and have no desire to trust in the bible completely, instead choosing to accept doctrine that is contrary to the word of God, which is contrary to the truth, and thre truth hurts as the sword cuts.

Thus all those who know the truth and are true believers, will be hated for His name.

i don’t think non-belivers are clue-less… Tehy know the truth somewhere inside… EVeryone is born with a consicence…altho the conscience can get pretty warped and then i
guss you can lose it…but most of the time, i think IT is probably because they DO know that there is a problem with the belivers…

They just don’t want to change…

and also, i was far more hated once i was inside the RCC… when i was out in the world, i was still not liked much because i had been through the spirit-filled thing… & people can sense that… but nothing like later…
The Catholics don’t call that being born again because being born again happens at baptism (John 3)

but if you want to find out what REALLY being hated for Christ’s sake is like, become an outspoken enthused Catholic…. even your family hates you then…

i think some honestly believe that God wants us to focus on enjoying life HERE and don’t be much concenred with the afterlife…

so they think its odd when you don’t party with them… or whatever…

i don’t even have the desire to “party” anymore… My idea of a party is completely different from worlldings’ ideas…

actually its hard to always figure out WHAT unbelievers are thinking… i gues we don’t really have to except it helps to understand them if evangelizing…

i think some honestly believe that God wants us to focus on enjoying life HERE and don’t be much concenred with the afterlife…

so they think its odd when you don’t party with them… or whatever…

i don’t even have the desire to “party” anymore… My idea of a party is completely different from worlldings’ ideas…

actually its hard to always figure out WHAT unbelievers are thinking… i gues we don’t really have to except it helps to understand them if evangelizing…

It helps very much in the evangalization process.

I think I’m hated because of my faith. I think I’ve alienated even priests, who just don’t like my attitude when I ask them questions, even when I try to be as nice as I can be.

I’ve had one priest physically push me out of his rectory, which path was through the vestibule of this particular church.

Where I used to work, people were motivated by ego and competitiveness and prejudices more than I could possibly believe. Every thing I said was “political” as it turned out.

Even in non-faith-related issues, people are just extremely defense and offensive. I had one boss that I really got along with, but he used to coach me “don’t kid yourself, it’s ALL personal.”

I went to Catholic schools for 12 years, and I was not exposed to the full fury of wild, unrestrained, unethical adolescent behavior in public schools. But, that behavior carried over into the workplace, where I worked anyway.

A devout Catholic co-worker commented that the people we worked with weren’t even THINKING about morality and their personal conduct. One example:

At lunch, there was a lively card game while people nibbled their lunch. I was watching one guy and immediately remarked when he made an illegal card play. Well, I’ll tell you, I got the dirtiest look and reply. And, this was from a guy who was reasonably well-educated and carried around evangelical books in his briefcase. He KNEW he was playing incorrectly, but that was part of his strategy to win the game.

In fact, every place I worked, I saw a lot of people just trying to get away with everything that they could. Their attitude “it’s not wrong until you get caught” – this was a guy who was stealing medical cocaine from a hospital and using it on the job. I was a real target of that guy. I was vilified because I couldn’t be trusted to “go along.”

i think we have osas to thank for this kind of thing… peple just think they can do wahtever they want and still get to Heaven… they act like God doesn’t care what they do as long as they don’t murder somone or rob a bank…

i guess they’ll find out … it will all come out in the Wash…
