Hi I would like some help explaining to my fiancée about the faith. She was questioning Christ’s claim so explained outlining Isaiah’s prophecy, and she asked “what if Jesus was just acting out the prophecies to look the messiah”. I know what I believe I just can’t find the words to convey it.

That wouldn’t explain the miracles or the Resurrection or the Ascension, among other things.

What if…?
You could imagine 1 million what if… no way I would follow that lead…

How did Jesus heal the blind man if he wasn’t who he claimed to be? How did he do any of the many miracles described in the New Testament?

The OT is not a proof text for the Messiah but rather the witness to what he would be and do–this was only seen in hindsight as the disciples saw what Jesus was saying and doing, which put them in mind of certain passages from the OT. Neither Jesus nor the disciples scoured OT books to find verses that would support Jesus’ being the Messiah. Indeed, there are some passages that are yet to be fulfilled that have to do with Christ’s absolute reign which will happen when he comes again. Until then, he reigns in the Church which he commissioned to take his word and sacrament to every creature, a concept also in the OT in it’s symbolism and prophecies that no one understood until Jesus’ resurrection. I hope that helps. 🙂

Jesus didn’t have to scour the Scripture because He is the Word of God.

First of all, the Old Testament is written history. Then it is prophetic. Those prophecies were given to certain Jews and are precise. The Word is always precise.

Jesus spent His life , from the moment of conception, taking deliberate steps to fulfill prophecy. For Him, He knew what to do, when to do it, what to say, after all, He was there before the foundation of earth.Between free will (think Peter with the sword trying to stop His arrest by the Romans) and Satan doing whatever he could to have Jesus NOT die on that cross(think the reluctance of Pilot to crucify Jesus) (and there are other incidences in the NT), Jesus had to deliberately make sure He fulfilled everything exactly.

And the OT speaks twice as much to the Second Coming as to the First, so it will be extremely exciting to see this too fulfilled precisely as Written.

Then how was Jesus born into the line of David which was prophesied by Isaiah 7:14?
How was Jesus born into Bethlehem, as was prophesied in Micah 5:1-2?
How was Jesus born into the tribe of Judah which was prophesied in Genesis 49:10?
How could Jesus be a descendant of King David as prophesied in Jeremiah 23:5?
How was Jesus born into the family of Jesse as prophesied in Isaiah 11:1?

How could Jesus decide which ancestral line to be born into, which town he would be born in, which tribe he would come from, which king he would be a descendant of, and born into a certain family?

There exists manuscripts of the Old Testament and the Dead Sea Scrolls, and they have been dated to predate Christ’s birth, so the prophecies weren’t just put in after Christ’s birth.

I said nothing about Jesus’ intentions and of course Jesus didn’t scour the OT. I’m afraid you have misinterpreted my post. Our Lord certainly knew the prophecies but those around him often didn’t. And, as _Abyssinia pointed out there is no way Jesus could have manipulated who his parents were, where he was to be born and the other infant prophecies. As to the Second Coming prophecies, some would use those to say that Jesus didn’t fulfill those so he couldn’t have been the Messiah, but we know that his coming was meant to be in two stages with the Church as his body on earth until he comes again because he rose from the dead.

Well, the way i see it, Jesus is God and He could do anything , anywhere, any way, He wants.

The listing of generations proved that Jesus was the Son of David, the Root of Jesse.

What is most interesting is that the OT gives His generations also of His Mother.

Since at that time, the land was divied into Judea and israel, He had valid claim to both kingdoms.

But , anyways, i don’t understand why we are argueing.

I agree with you–I just wanted to be sure I had made my point clear instead of muddying things up. 😊 Blessed Easter to you and yours. 😃

But Jesus actually went out of His way NOT to seem like the Messiah. It depends upon what Gospel you read.

No offence, but the theory of you fiance is really stupid.
