Jesus "the Prophet"?

I read in a book this morning that Jesus is considered by muslims to be “the greatest prophet.” Can someone (of any faith background, or none) explain to me what this means? The islamic Jesus is a greater prophet than Mohammad? Doesn’t one need to leave behind a text of some kind, or at least an oral tradition of prophecy, to be considered a prophet? What makes him “the greatest” (in the context of Islam)?

We believe in God and in what was sent down to us and what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and what was given to Moses, Jesus, and all the prophets by their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we devote ourselves to Him ) (Al-Baqarah 2:136).

I’ts the God Almighty who gives more honour / high status to some of His messengers. Such as , some were blessed with holy books , some performed miracles etc. But Muslims are not supposed to do the comparison between the Prophets (peace be upon them all ). We respect them all

Jesus (pbuh) is a blessed messenger of God but we must not say that he is the greatest .

Muslims honor Mohammed more than other prophets - but Muslims won’t tell you this, and they’ll flat out deny it, because they want to keep up an apppearance of equal honor to all God’s prophets. However, two things shoot down their own appearance of equal honor: the fact that God honors some prophets more than others and the fact that Mohammed is called Allah’s prophet by every Muslims: “There is no god but Allah and Mohammed is his prophet.” So don’t believe Muslims when they say they honor all the prophets equally, without a comparison of them.

Mohammed is venerated by Muslims, yet Muslims accuse Christians of veneration of Mary. They equate Marian veneration with worship. So I guess they’re really worshipping Mohammed, if veneration in itself equals worship.

Mohammed is regarded as the greatest prophet, and the seal of the prophets, by Muslims. After him, Jesus is considered the next greatest prophet.

According to our scripture and tradition , the following is what mainstream Muslims believe in regards to Jesus,

Jesus is an Isrealite born of a Virgin , he was sent to his people . A prophet . He is one of the 5 burdened prophet. or the 5 of the greatest responsibilities.

Noah , Abraham, Moses, Jesus , Muhammad.

He was sent to guide the people of israel to correct understanding of God and spirituality. He was also sent as a relief of previous strict rules that were set upon them.

According to Islam , Muslims should not make distinction , preference between God’s prophets. Some do . However it is against what islam teaches.

We were ordered not to make preference in both the Quran and the Hadith .

Each prophet had his mission, on Judgement day, comes prophets with nations behind them, come other prophets with one man or two as followers. Their results is not their appraisal. They have done their Job and they a re the best of humanity. God guides whomever he wills. For us who are not prophets of God it is hypocritical if we say this one is better than that one. Reason is we believe we are not even capable of reaching fraction of their level of faith and devotion.

However Muslims during the course of the study of their scripture and faith will come across God himself giving certain profile to different prophets.

For example no man God has talked to directly on earth except Moses. Abraham was so honored to the point that in the Quran he is called the friend of God . Jesus was honored by the inability of Satan whisper to him , in acceptance of the prayer of his grandmother the mother of Mary who prayed that Mary and her offspring would be spared the whispers of Satan. Jesus and mary have a very interesting story in the Quran along with Zachari and his son.

There is no Muslim scripture that shows any of the prophets to be the best or the greatest . and frankly it is not somthing that bothers the everyday Muslim.

Muslims follow the creed of all the prophets of God . We worship God alone , the God of Abraham . Muslims believe that God has sent a final prophet through the line of ishmael . He brought a scripture from God to the world and not only the people of Israel.

This prophet has come with clarifications from God and a new legislation for the world.

Personally , it doesnt matter for me if Muhammed is the best , greatest prophet or not . He is a prophet of God that guided scores of people to the God of Abraham.

We follow him .

I thought it was from a book titled The Case Against Christianity by Michael Martin, but now I can’t find the exact passage. I have a bad habit of reading a number of books simultaneously. In any event, I don’t think the author was/is a muslim and I think he was venturing outside of his area of expertise.
