He was a Rabbi (a Priest).

And He was sent to save all man…'universally" (which means catholic or “katolicos” in Greek).

Jesus was a universal Priest (while He was a Pharisee Himself, He didn’t belong to the sect, He was literally Christianity).

Also:
He wasnt’ married (except to The Church).
He did’nt have any children.
He heard confessions and forgave sins.
He ordained and distributed The Holy Eucharist.
He didn’t receive a salary to preach.
He didn’t charge to preach.
He had no worldly possesions.
He was chaste.

Just like Priests are today.

🙂

We also know it is very much a Jew.
  1. He lived with his mother until he was 30.
  2. He went into his father’s business.
  3. His mother was sure he was a God and he was sure she was a virgin
At least that’s the way my Jewish friend explained it to me

Hi 2nd,

I can’t tell if you’re serious but…

A rabbi is (was) not a priest; he is (was) a teacher. Only members of the tribe of Levi could be priests.

But the letter to the Hebrews is all about the priesthood of Jesus:
… Christ did not attribute to Himself the glory of becoming high priest, but he received it from him who said, “You are my son; I today have brought you forth”, as he says elsewhere, “You are a priest for ever according to the order of Melchisedek.”
Heb. 5, 5ff.

So the fact that Jesus is a priest is clear from the Bible. No need to strain our brains to prove it.

That is a modern definition of rabbi. Truth be told there isn’t any Jewish priests because of the destruction of the Temple in 70 ad. The other poster was right… no priests from the tribe of Levi = no priests for the Jews. A rabbi is indeed a teacher of scripture. Jesus established a new covenant and he is the high priest under that covenant. His Church is the universal or Catholic Church. He even told us he didn’t come to abolish the old covenant, he came to fulfill it. Remember when Jesus first started his ministry? He went to the Jews first didn’t he? But occasionally he healed or helped a gentile… and what happened? They were our foreshadowing that salvation was going to be offered to them as well… in fact, when the Jews didn’t believe in him, it was the gentiles that showed by deed that they did.

Later, when the apostles began their ministry, they started with the Jews… and what did they tell the Jews that had persecuted them? In Acts 3:12
  • When Peter saw this, he addressed the people, "You Israelites, why are you amazed at this, and why do you look so intently at us as if we had made him walk by our own power or piety? 13 The God of Abraham, (the God) of Isaac, and (the God) of Jacob, the God of our ancestors, has glorified 4 his servant Jesus whom you handed over and denied in Pilate’s presence, when he had decided to release him. 14 You denied the Holy and Righteous One 5 and asked that a murderer be released to you. 15 6 The author of life you put to death, but God raised him from the dead; of this we are witnesses. 16 And by faith in his name, this man, whom you see and know, his name has made strong, and the faith that comes through it has given him this perfect health, in the presence of all of you. 17 Now I know, brothers, that you acted out of ignorance, 7 just as your leaders did; 18 but God has thus brought to fulfillment what he had announced beforehand through the mouth of all the prophets, 89 21 whom heaven must receive until the times of universal restoration 10 of which God spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old. 22 For Moses said: 11 'A prophet like me will the Lord, your God, raise up for you from among your own kinsmen; to him you shall listen in all that he may say to you. 23 Everyone who does not listen to that prophet will be cut off from the people.* that his Messiah would suffer. 19 Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away, 20 and that the Lord may grant you times of refreshment and send you the Messiah already appointed for you, Jesus, 'This is like their last plea for the Jews to repent… to show the errors of their ways, after this we see Gentiles being converted to Christianity. In Acts 10:
  • 44 While Peter was still speaking these things, the holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the word. 19 45 The circumcised believers who had accompanied Peter were astounded that the gift of the holy Spirit should have been poured out on the Gentiles also, 46 for they could hear them speaking in tongues and glorifying God. Then Peter responded, 47 “Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people, who have received the holy Spirit even as we have?” 48 He ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. *
At the time of the baptism of the Gentiles the other apostles get mad at Peter thinking that Gentiles should not be baptized… but he points out that they received the Holy Spirit so if God accepts them, who are they to deny them?

At the time that Jesus was with us physically, there “was” the Temple. In His time, the Temple existed. So if it’s your assertion that no Temple equals no Priesthood, then Jesus would still have been a Priest.

Besides all that, Jesus was a Pharisee. He was literally a Pharisitical Priest. He taught in the Temple (something that couldn’t have happened had he “not” been an ordained Priest).

Rabbi/Priest, tomatoes/tomahtahs.

Both are the same.

And besides, Jesus wasn’t just a “Jewish Priest” by the time His work was done, but He became a Priest to all nations universally.

This makes Him a universal Priest…a “catholic” Priest.

No one can deny that He is literally “a” Priest nor that He serves no one nation, nor culture, nor people…He serves the World…the entire world; universally (aka, Catholically!).

Jesus is a Catholic Priest.

🙂

Laudatur Iesus Christus.

Each Catholic priest is an agent and representative of Jesus Christ. All priestly acts are Jesus’ acts done *in persona Christi *by the priest, done at Jesus’ instruction and on His behalf. The Apostolic succession connects the act of the priest directly to the personal will of Jesus.

Jesus is *the *Catholic Priest.

Pax Christi nobiscum.

Dictionary.com is wrong.
Rabbi/Priest, tomatoes/tomahtahs.

More like tomato/tyranosaurus

Both are very different

The defining function of a priest is the offering of sacrifice. The Aaronic priests offered sacrifices. Catholic Priests offer the unbloody sacrifice of the Holy Eucharist. Rabbis do not offer sacrifices. I have no idea what sin hounds, sky pilots or sky scouts do.

He was a Rabbi (a Priest).
Rabbi does not equal priest.

Jesus was not a Jewish priest, since he was not a Levite, and was barred by law from functioning as one.
And He was sent to save all man…'universally" (which means catholic or “katolicos” in Greek).
Jesus was a universal Priest (while He was a Pharisee Himself, He didn’t belong to the sect, He was literally Christianity).
There is no indication that Jesus belonged to the party of the Pharisees (unlike St. Paul) but his theology was probably closest to them than to the Sadducees, Essenes, or Zealots.
Also:
He wasnt’ married (except to The Church).
He did’nt have any children.
Neither of these are characteristic of the priesthood. There are married priests.
He heard confessions and forgave sins.
He ordained and distributed The Holy Eucharist.
He didn’t receive a salary to preach.
He didn’t charge to preach.
He had no worldly possesions.
He was chaste.

Actually, Jesus is THE Catholic priest, not A Catholic priest. There is only one priest.
