I recently had a discussion (closer to an argument) over whether Jesus was conceited or not. I said that was impossible, but the to guys I was arguing with insisted that He was, because He had said something about staying with Him because “you will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have Me.” Because He this, they said, that meant that He thought He was more important than the poor. I couldn’t believe it. I replied, of course He is! He’s God! And it kind of went downhill from there… I am right in saying that God is more important than the poor, right? If we have no love, then our acts are useless, so if we don’t love God and our neighbor, then whatever we do to help the poor is meaningless, right? Isn’t God more important than anything in this world and beyond?
