Jesus was married? What are your thoughts?

Yeah, how did Protestants “jump all over” this?
Hi William and thank you for your post. I have actually had protestant friends call me when things this have occured and say, “Ah ha” basically, thinking that they had a “gotcha” moment. Then when that facts come how, they move right on to the next anti-Catholic argument, without even skipping a beat. I’ve seen this here at CAF as well. So, I guess my answer to you is that, I know this from personal experience

That’s not what I asked, Jimmy.

This is already being discussed on the thread entitled “The Gospel of Jesus’ wife discovered”.

I have no doubt that the document in question is both genuine in that it is what it appears, a fourth century fragment. I have no doubt that it speaks about the wife of Jesus. With that being said this document is a curiosity and nothing more. The Church has already weighed in on the canon of Sacred Scripture. The Gospel of Mark is in the canon because it was found by scholars to be trustworthy. The gospel of Thomas was not included because it was found not to be trustworthy. The Church is protected from error by the Holy Spirit and her word has already been spoken. This document as I said is a curiosity and of no importance at all.

HERE WE GO AGAIN

Why is it that whenever there is allegedly “new evidence” that “Jesus had a brother”, or that “Jesus was married”, the main stream media jumps all over it and so do protestants. However when this same "new evidence " is determined to be false or a fraud, there isn’t so much as a peep from these same media outlets or from protestants?

The most recent example is the supposed papyrus that claims that, “Jesus refers to having wife, named Mary”.

Most scholars have already discredited this “evidence” and yet a major cable news outlet reported one side of the story… that it’s real and left out the other, namely that it has been discredited by exports.

Another example is the “Ossuary of James” that was inscribed- “James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus”. This turned out to be a fraud and the person creating it went to prison.

Your thoughts?
What makes you think the Protestants believe this nonsense any more than the Catholics do? The Ossuary thing was a whole different thing. That was a question of whether Jesus had brothers or not and has been a subject of debate for a couple of hundred years between Catholics and Protestants, and is based on their interpretation of the Bible.

But Protestants are not claiming to believe this nonsense about Jesus being married. That flies in the face of their traditional Christian beliefs also, and they ARE Christians. Don’t lump them with the secular media and atheists.

There were hundreds and hundreds of men with the name of Jesus (“Yeshua” in Hebrew) at the time Jesus lived. Just because there’s an ancient fragment with the name Yeshua on it doesn’t mean it’s referring to Jesus Christ.

Also, the fragment was found in area of Egypt known for being home to a group of gnostics/heretics who produced bogus “gospels” or scriptures with wild claims and depictions of Jesus Christ’s lives. The early Christians rejected these gnostic Egpytian “gospels.”

The only thing that they can prove, is that the ms. is from the fourth century A.D. 🤷

If that. It’s not a bombshell by any means. However, it’s good to know about this so when you encounter someone who says, “They found a new gospel where Jesus had a wife,” you’ll have your facts ready!

Mary Magdalene exclaimed "Rabboni " (Teacher) when she realized who she was speaking to on Easter morning. Is that how a wife would welcome back her husband from the dead? The story is fabricated and unbelieveable.

That’s not what I asked, Jimmy.
Hello again William,

I thought I was addressing your comment… maybe not… Let me use a generalized example. Many science and history cable channels and some news outlets are generally anti-Catholic and their reporting seems to affirm this truth. I haven’t had any protestants say anything to me about this lastest issue, although I have heard from protestants in the past, when similar events have occurred. I’m sure that if I conducted an internet search into to this most recent account, I could find examples of protestants using this most recent claim, regarding “Jesus’ wife” to try to argue against a Catholic belief. Would you agree?

I hope this helps.

Mike,
True, the Gnostic Gospels are a good example of this, where for example, there is a “Gospel of Adam”. Martin Luther and Calvin wrote things, where they disagreed with Catholic Church doctrine but that didn’t make it true.

Thanks for your post.

Hi CB Catholic,

Thank you for your post.

There has also been a debate over whether or not Jesus was married. This was the focus of the movie, The last temptation of Christ. These incidents are often used by non-Catholics to try to argue against celibacy in the priesthood, for example. … not a new argument…

Whatever. I’m just glad I’m not a bachelor anymore. These days, not even someone who has been a bachelor for 2000 years is safe.

…Not to mention that a lot of that Da Vinci code, fiction came from similar dubious and scurrilous sources.

Merged 3 threads on same topic, which belongs here in Apologetics. 👍

I personally don’t believe it does. I feel that if Jesus had a wife, it definitely would have been mentioned waaaaaay back there!
