Without the Bible, God’s unchanging and inerrrant Word, how would you guard against false teaching within the Christian Church?
I’m a recent entrant into the Catholic Church, so I don’t claim to be an expert on these issues, but here is what I understand from much study over the past two years:
Yes, obviously the Bible is the inerrant eternal Word of God, and therefore is essential to preserve Christian truth, but so is Sacred Tradition, which includes the doctrinal pronouncements of the Church outside of Sacred Scripture as well as the oral teachings passed down from the Apostles and others through the past 1,973 years (or so).
How is truth preserved in Sacred Tradition? When the Church speaks
ex cathedra on matters of faith and morals, she is inherently incapable of error, in accordance with the promise Jesus made to the apostles that the Holy Spirit would “guide you to all truth.” *Jn 16:13; *also see
1 Tim 3:15, where Paul describes the church (there was no “big C Church” yet) as the “pillar and foundation of truth.” There are other Scriptural supports as well, but these are the two I’ve seen cited most often.
This does *not *mean that any one person, including the Pope, is incapable of error or sin, but that the Church, as the mystical Body of Christ, is incapable of speaking inconsistently with the teaching of its Head, who of course is Jesus Himself. Again, keep in mind this guarantee of inerrancy applies to the Pope only when he speaks
ex cathedra, after due reflection and discussion with the Bishops–such as in the conciliar documents of Vatican II or the other Councils. Many people, including many if not most Catholics, misunderstand this. The Pope himself is not infallible. The Church
is infallible, and at times the Pope is called upon to speak for the Church in matters of faith and morals. But “matters of faith and morals” is not all-inclusive; for example, whether priests can be married is not a matter of faith or morals, nor is the Order of the Mass. On the other hand, the stance of the Church on abortion and contraception IS a matter of morals, and cannot change, because it is the doctrinal, dogmatic teaching of the Church established by Jesus, and guided by the Holy Spirit.
Im sure there are others who can say this better than I can, and please forgive any error I may have made in my attempt to restate these matters.
May the Lord bless all who read this.
