Let me begin by saying that I realize this question may seem a little odd to some, seeing as how most of us feel that the way that Jesus wore his hair is insignificant next to the fact that he is the Christ. However I have become involved in a discussion/debate with a fundamentalist church’s pastor about this very thing. Let me first detail our positions:
Milton’s: Jesus had short hair and no beard. He claims that we see this because it was the style of the time in the Roman empire. He also claims that as Christians we should all do the same to be more like Christ.
Mine: The fact that the Romans wore their hair and facial hair in a certain style had very little to do with the way that a good Jew would have worn their hair and beard. I am certain that Jesus would have had a beard as this was the custom of Jewish males at that time, I am not sure of whether or not Jesus would have had long or short cropped hair. However, that being said, I do not find it significant in any way to how someone should appear. I also thing someones actions are far more significant than their appearance.
That all being said, I would like to hear from an expert. I am looking for an answer based on historical fact. I am sure that this is known, and I hope to hear back so that I will have an answer the next time we meet. Just for the record, I have fairly short hair, and a clean shaven face.
