talking with a JW the subject came up about if Jesus is God could man be Gods brother? I told him no because the passages he was talking about where it says Jesus’s bro’s ,there is no word for cousin and thats why they use bro. So he came back with not true, in Luke 1:36 it talks about MARYS cousin ELIZIBETH!! I looked in my DOUAY-RHEIMS and it says cousin. I checked 10 other versions [cath.&prot.] and the same verse says reletive or kinswomen , but since I use myD/R Bible most of the time, he thinks he has me cornered!!! so I come to the college of knoledge for HELP!!!:knight1: :irish2:

I did not major in linguistics nor am I aware of the exact words in the original language. It is a true statement that Jesus did not have brothers However, I must say that is a reach to try and stump the divinity of Jesus Christ based on linguistic issues that he himself may not even understand fully.

For one, I hope somebody much smarter than me can answer your question. Secondly I don’t understand why a JW would reach that far to try and tell you or me as a Catholic that Jesus Christ is not divine!

In John 20:28 Thomas says to Jesus, “My Lord and my God.” In the original Greek it literally reads, “The Lord of me and the God of me.” It would be nothing short of blasphemy for Jesus not to rebuke Thomas if he was wrong. Jesus does nothing of the sort, but instead accepts Thomas’ profession of his identity as God.

This topic was discussed not too long ago. Check out the following thread.

As one poster noted, the Greek word for cousin is used only once in the NT and that is in Col 4:10. The Greek word used in Luke 1:36 is better translated as kinsman or relative. Two different words, but the meanings seem to be the same.
