hi everybody. thank you again for answering my questions yesterday. i have a another question yet again. and it is something that came about today while thinking about god.

God is God. God cannot be tempted. ok…

Jesus is God. Jesus cannot be tempted either.

In the bible it says Jesus was tempted many times by many things. Whether it be starving in the desert, or the many statements of temptation in the book of Matthew.

We know jesus was tempted. so since god cannot be tempted we know now that Jesus is not the son of God. Is this valid and justified of me to say.

Note* i love jesus and believe in christianity 100% 😉

Why can’t Jesus as God be tempted? Being God, He can’t succumb to Temptation, but He can be tempted.

If Jesus is also fully human, then He has human needs… one of which is hunger. Now, if you fasted for 40 days, wouldn’t the thought of fresh baked bread at least tempt you?

but if your god, human or not, you are not tempted by anything?

god was a human jesus christ, but since jesus was god, he couldn’t be tempted. 🤷

but if your god, human or not, you are not tempted by anything?
The hypostatic union. There are two natures in Jesus Christ - one divine and one human. These two natures are not commingled. They remain distinct, yet they are substantially joined together.

When we say that Jesus was tempted, we mean that it was in his human nature that he was tempted, not his divine nature. And, as already pointed out above, being tempted is not a sin.

im not saying its a sin, i know jesus never sinned, but if jesus was tempted to sin, what im saying is that god can never be tempted because god is omniscient all knowing and all powerful.

but this sort of helps. 👍

Whoa!!! Was Jesus tempted to sin? Or was Jesus tempted to eat bread?

OK, now you’re going to make me go back to my study bible.

From the Navarre Bible:
Jesus, our Saviour, allowed himself to be tempted because he so chose; and he did so out of love for us and to instruct us. However, since He was perfect, He could only be tempted externally.

Catholic teaching tells us that there are three levels of temptation:
  1. suggestion, that is external temptation, which we can undergo without committing any sin;
  2. temptation, in which we take a certain delight, whether prolonged or not, even though we do not give clear consent; this level of temptation has now become internal and there is some sinfulness in it;
  3. Temptation to which we consent; this is always sinful, and, since it affects the deepest part of the soul, is definitely internal. By allowing Himself to be tempted, Jesus wanted to teach us how to fight and conquer our temptations. We will do this by having trust in God and prayer, with the help of God’s grace and by having fortitude.

does god allow himself to be tempted?
I think the offer for food and such would have fallen under Temptation 1. Now, Jesus could have allowed it to fall under Temptation 2, but He didn’t.

So, God allows the Devil to present Him Temptation 1, but Jesus refused to let it become Temptation 2.

It’s very easy to understand. The word “tempt” has two meanings

meaning 1 - try to persuade
meaning 2 - persuade
(source : Oxford Thesaurus)

Satan tried to persuade Jesus. In other words, Satan tempted Jesus (meaning 1). Or, Jesus was tempted (by Satan, i.e).

But Jesus was not persuaded. In other words, Jesus was not tempted (meaning 2).

“God cannot be tempted (persuaded) by evil.” (James 1:13)

It would seem that in the Kingdom of Heaven, where God reigns, there is no temptation. But here on earth, where Satan seems to reign, he will try and tempt anyone that is here, including Christ.

Was satan that foolish to try and tempt God’s Son, oh what a prize that would be. Or, like all of Christ’s life here on earth, it was for ‘instruction’… for our benefit… as the Passion was… as was the purpose for Him coming down to our level… to show us the Way to get to His level.

Why is it that this (good) answer seems to have been passed over?

No; and for more as to why it is not a valid pov:

Jesus, due to the Hypostatic Union, is fully God and fully man. In His humanity, he has a human will - which is able to be tempted. Due to the fact that His human will was completely in uniformity with His divine will, the temptation did not succeed as the devil had wanted.

James 1:14-15
“But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”

Jesus was enticed by the Devil in Mt4/Lk4, but he was not drawn away of his own lust.

Ps 95: Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, a]
as you did that day at Massah **(“http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm 95 ;&version=31;#fen-NIV-15463b”)] in the desert,
9 where your fathers tested and tried me [God],
though they had seen what I did.

This means “tempted” (which is the word some translations use).
