Is it ok to wear jewelry that has things like crosses or images of crosses on it, knowing that at some point it will be upside down? I know I sound very ahem odd, but I would really like to know. Let’s say someone is wearing a bracelet with a cross on it, and when that person walks, the cross is shown upside down on their wrist. Or someone has a cross around their neck and when they sleep, it lands backwards on the bed or something.

I have a sort of habit of freaking out when I see a cross, or anything that looks like a cross upside down.😊

I wouldn’t think anything about it because it’s not like the person intentionally put the cross upside down (at least MOST people that wear a cross or crucifix wouldn’t dream of doing something like that). If I find my cross has gotten hung up on something and it’s upside done, or flipped around, whatever, I just correct it and go about my business. I don’t give it a second thought. 👍

I wear a cross, and when I sleep, it’s almost always upside down, I have to constantly make sure it’s upright, which is very stressful. Of course, I don’t want it to be upside down, it’s just very hard for me to lie there knowing the cross is probably upside down. Same thing with other jewelry. At some point it’s upside down and it make me anxious. I would have to walk around with my hand raised all the time in order for it to be right-side up. I’ve just decided to take the jewelry off but I’d really like it back on, just not all the stress of constantly having to make sure it’s not upside down.

You need to discuss this with your priest-- this appears to me to be very scrupulous thoughts you are having.

I am rather scrupulous. Have been getting a bit better though.

I would just like to know if it’s okay to wear my bracelet with a cross on it, even though it will at times be upside down with me or without me knowing it.

I would prefer to have my cross/crucifix/medal upside down, around the wrong way etc… than not have it on me at all.

Just a personal preference though… I don’t think God minds… You can’t help what happens to our jewellery when we sleep sweetie.

I remember an earlier thread you started…

forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=150573

wherein you said that you were worried about the fact that your “t” looks like an upside down cross when you right it. Please refer to my answer in that post. Also, mention this to your confessor, as it seems that you’ve got some scrupulous thoughts pinning you down. I’ve been through almost the same thing, and it’s a hard thing to get over sometimes, but just talk to your confessor about it and try to get your mind on other things–if worries come into your head, just pray until they go away. It worked for me.

why? get over it, is my first reaction. If it bothers you, don’t hang upside down on the monkey bars while wearing a cross. Peter and several other martyrs were crucified upside down, so if you see it, simply think of them and their witness. if you search on the spirituality forum under scrupulosity some folks have post excellent links to books and sites that will help you. You will not help this problem by asking questions about spiritual questions of strangers on the internet. Find one good priest, stick with him for confession and spiritual direction, read only books he recommends, do only prayer practices, devotions and penances he recommends, other than the normal accepted practices of the Church, and don’t second guess. This is classic advice from spiritual writers.

Peter left this earth on an upside down Cross.

Good enough for me. No!

Is it a bad thing to think of Peter?

I think NOT.

Precisely - the upside down cross (NOT upside down crucifix) is the symbol of St Peter. Nothing untoward about it at all.

But someone else seeing it may see it right-side up…if you are in the room with other people while you’re sleeping, that is. God knows why you’re wearing the cross and from His angle, it’s fine no matter how it might look to you at a given time. 👍

Your jewelry will last longer in better condition if you don’t wear it to bed. Then you won’t have to worry about whether it’s upside down, because it will be safely in the jewelry box, right side up, just as you left it.

Do you have a nice crucifix hanging over your bed? That should take the place of the crosses you might wear.
