I would, however, incline to think the interpretation of this incident could be correct, as far as one or two Jewish serial killers being responsible, as long as we steer clear of the just-as-historical-as-anti-Semitism (therefore evil) “Jews were blameless holy creatures” interpretation of the whole affair.

What I mean is, there are some very weird ideas among orthodox Jews–Lubavitcher Hasidism, anyone? It is not terribly unlikely that heretical Jews could be very nasty. Especially considering that the two esoteric movements in the twelfth century were Catharism and Hermeticism–both of which had some very creepy things going on.

Interpreting Judaism in light of some of the ideas in Hermeticism could well yield something very nasty. Hermetic-influenced Kabbalah can be interpreted, not Orthodox-ly I think, to say there are evil aspects to God–what if someone decides to get in touch with them? And how much nastier would they be if they get their Hermeticism right from the source?

Exactly…If there is a predisposition to hate and/or mistrust a group of people, the actions of a few might well be inflated to the point where it becomes apart of general cultural belief…

And then there was the case I heard of, as a child, from my grandmother…She worked at Eastman Kodak in its early days as big employer, and one of the girls she worked with, suffered from some sort of horrific anaemia, and would collapse from lack of blood/lack of oxygen to the brain.
Back then (pre-WWI), there was no real treatment for such conditions. On doctor’s orders, therefore, the young woman (teenager) would visit the nearest slaughterhouse on regular occasions, and drink several glasses of fresh cow/pig/sheep blood. It would get her blood count high enough to keep her in condition to work…
But…Imagine coming upon the scene, with no knowledge beforehand. Now imagine that you are living in, say, 1106, instead of 1906…and that the girl is a member of a religious and/or racial minority. What might pop into your head?? Maybe a vampire; maybe a “bizarre religious ritual”?
Not, I would imagine, someone with an illness that didn’t really have a name of its own yet…

Has anybody read Toaff’s book (I haven’t), and if so, can he tell us what the thesis is? I have heard vaguely that he admits that ritual murders occurred, but doesn’t attribute them to “the Jews” generally, but to some extremist sect.

My great-uncle had a nice little egg business in some predominantly Jewish neighborhoods in Rochester, NY, for some years. His eggs were so popular, because he not only candled every egg, and discarded the slightest hint of blood; he also would replace free of charge, any blood-spotted eggs, with new ones–and take the word of the buyer that it had blood in it…

Yes, the Romans DID ban Jewish infant circumcision. You need to study more history if you are going to comment on the subject. In 135 AD the Roman Governors banned the practice of infant circumcision.

I certainly didn’t say that. During the civil rights movement of the 50’s and 60’s secular Jews were at the forefront of the struggle. But what many don’t know about the quote from the Talmud Sanhedrin 37a so popularized in Schindler’s list actually goes, “whoever preserves a single soul of Israel (a Jew) saves the world”.

There has absolutely been abuses and persecution of Jews by Christians. Not in dispute. But guess what, up untill the 14th century when the last Jewish kingdom in Ethiopia was absorbed into the empire, Jewish groups had also sporadically been persecuting Christians. Betcha never heard of that side of history. But regarding children, like it or hate it, the church has always sought and welcomed Jewish children to be raised as Christians. The numbers of Jewish children hidden during WW II says it all.

I never said that, and you have twisted what I wrote. There are of course many Jewish philanthropists. Many Jewish celebrities give to non-Jewish causes (i.e. Barbara Streisand giving to the Democratic party). What I said was Jewish ORGANIZATIONS (and Jewish religious groups in general) tend to be involved with and interested only in Jewish groups and causes. If you can provide me an example to the contrary I’d be interested.

You are quite correct in that the Romans banned circumcision. That is the background for the Bar Kochba revolt of the Jews against the Romans. My comments were a sardonic reply as to the reason you believe that circumcision was banned by the Romans.

My academic background includes in addition to studies in law a background in political science the history of Judaisim and the history of Zionism.I will take under advisement your suggestion that I add to my formal studies. I would suggest to you that “Jewish persecution of Christians” is a somewhat overplayed card by those rightfully ashamed of the institutionalized religious based persecutions of the Jewish community.

The welcoming of Jewish children to be raised as Christians is not considered by myself or other Jews as toleration. It is exactly the opposite. It shows not only disdain for Jews as Jews but conditions their acceptance on their abandoning their beliefs and adopting anothers.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: There will be no lasting or real peace in the Middle East until Arabs stop demonizing Jews.

Many Arabs like to say they lived in harmony with their Jewish brothers and sisters until the state of Israel was created in 1948. This, like so much of official and unofficial Arab rhetoric about the Jewish state, is a lie.

In 1840, a vicious rumor began spreading in Syria. A priest, Father Toma, supposedly went to the Jewish Quarter of Damascus and never returned. The story was that the priest was slaughtered by a group of rabbis and other Jews. Not a drop of blood was spilled. It was collected, so the infamous “blood libel” story went, and used to make Passover matzoh.

The result of this rumor was the death, torture and plunder of countless Jews throughout the Arab world.

That was 160 years ago, but guess what? The blood libel story is alive and well and making the rounds of the official Arab press and television shows. Last month, alone, it resurfaced in two prominent places.

On Oct. 24, the Palestinian Liberation Army Mufti, Sheikh Col. Nader Al-Tamini, said in a television debate on the Qatari Arabic cable news channel Al-Jazeera that there can be no peace with the Jews because they suck and use the blood of Arabs on the holidays of Passover and Purim.

Just four days later, the official Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram published a full-page article by columnist Adel Hamooda titled, “A Jewish Matzoh Made from Arab Blood.” It retold the infamous blood libel story of 1840 in great detail, recounting it as a documented historical fact.

The author went on to explain that the Jews’ “bestial drive” to add the blood of non-Jews to matzoh is at the root of the violence and killing of Arab children in Israel today. Arab children, he wrote, are often found torn to pieces without a single drop of blood in their bodies.

“The most reasonable explanation is that the blood was taken to be kneaded into the dough of extremist Jews to be used in Matzohs to be devoured during Passover,” he wrote.

Huh? That’s the most reasonable explanation? The answer is yes to the hysterical propagandists of the Middle East.

The “blood libel” story has been told over and over again through the years. But it has more currency today in the Arab world than perhaps ever before.

Why? Because you can’t tell a lie about Jews that is too big for the Arab governments, Arab schools and Arab press. As an Arab-American, I wish that were not true. But it is.

It is also true that as long as such lies are spread, there is no chance for improving relations between Jews and Arabs. There is no chance for peace between Israel and her neighbors. There is no chance for reconciliation between these two peoples.

Unfortunately, I can predict the reaction from many of my Arab brothers and sisters: “Great! We don’t want peace with these monsters. We don’t want better relations. We don’t want reconciliation with the Jews. We want only victory over them!”

As one of the very few commentators of Arabic heritage who dares to point out the obvious incredibility in such horror stories, I will be called names. I will be vilified. I will be threatened, intimidated and harassed.

That’s OK. Somebody’s got to say it. Someone has to tell the truth. It’s long past time – about 160 years past time – that someone stood up and characterized these ugly rumors as exactly what they are, unforgivable blood libels against an entire people.

Please don’t tell me this is a two-way street. Sure, some Jews are guilty of hot rhetoric about Arabs. But nothing like this. Nothing. Nowhere. Not now or ever. Hate speech like this would not find its way into any newspaper in Israel. No television station would broadcast lies of this magnitude. No, this is an Arab problem – hateful hyperbole run amok.

The first step to true and lasting peace in the Middle East must be to shatter the foundation of lies beneath the never-ending negotiations, one-sided concessions and the war of attrition that lead nowhere but to more bloodshed, death and destruction. Can we at least agree to put the blood libel stories to rest, once and for all?

BLOOD LIBEL

It is next to impossible to explain the accusations that were hurled at the Jews during this time. Jews were persecuted not only for being “Christ-killers” but as “baby-killers.”

The first such accusation – better known as a “blood libel” – was leveled in 1144 in Norwich, England. There, Jews were charged with kidnapping a Christian baby and draining the baby of blood. The charge became so popular it would sweep, in various forms, through Europe and then spread to other parts of the world.

The most famous of all blood libel legends is that of the ritual murder of the child Hugh of Lincoln, England in 1255. The story was immortalized in a ballad so well-known in England and Scotland that is number 155 in the standard cannon of English and Scottish ballads compiled by Francis James Child in the 19th century. The best-know tale of ritual murder is the Prioress’s Tale, found in Chaucer’s 14th century classic work or early English fiction, Canterbury Tales. One verse of the tale goes like this: (2)

From that time forward these Jews conspired to chase this innocent child from the earth’s face. Down a dark alley-way they found and hired a murderer who owned that secret place; and as the boy passed at his happy pace this cursed Jew grabbed him and held him, slit his little throat and cast him in a pit.

Now why did Jews need blood in Christian opinion? This is a multiple-choice question:

Jews suffered from hemorrhoids as a punishment for killing Jesus and drinking blood was the best cure for hemorrhoids at the time.
All Jewish men menstruate and need a monthly blood transfusion.
Jewish men, when they’re circumcised, lose so much blood because of that surgical procedure that they need to drink Christian babies’ blood.
It’s the chief ingredient in matzah, and therefore prior to every Passover Jews would be requiring a large supply.
All of the above.

What do you think the correct answer is? Shockingly, it’s (e) – all of the above.

This is a very important lesson in anti-Semitism. You can say anything about the Jews and people will believe it.

It’s ironic that Jews, who are prohibited by Jewish law of consuming any blood whatsoever (kosher meat is carefully washed and salted to remove all traces of blood) were precisely the people accused of drinking blood.

The blood libel makes even less sense when you consider that in the 13th century the Church adopted the doctrine of transubstantiation. This is a mystical idea which maintains that when the priest says mass over the wafer and wine, these objects mystically change into the body and blood of Jesus. Christians who consume the wafer and drink the wine are said to be mystically eating the flesh of Jesus and drinking his blood.(3)

It’s ironic that the Christian world, while engaged in the ritual of “drinking the blood of Jesus” would accuse the Jews – who are forbidden to drink blood – of this totally fabricated hideous crime.

But then the accusations got even more wild.

Starting in Switzerland and Germany in the 13th century, Jews were accused of kidnapping communion wafers from churches. Why would the Jews do this in Christian view?

To torture it.

Medieval documents tell stories describing how a Jew (usually called always called Abraham) steals a wafer from a church, sticks a knife in it, and blood starts pouring out. And then he cuts it up into pieces and sends it to different Jews who all torture it.

This would be funny, if not for a fact that thousands of Jews were slaughtered as a result of such stories. For example, the entire Jewish community of Berlitz, near Berlin in Germany, was all burned alive based on the accusation of torturing a wafer!

Um…there IS evidence, and the book lays it out. The men who were hanged in connection with the death of St Simonino were convicted on EVIDENCE. Confessions and testimony are EVIDENCE. Toaff further presents the case for his theory with more EVIDENCE.

Since I’m still officially new here, I don’t know if this topic has come up already, but I wanted to get some dialogue going on this topic. For anyone who doesn’t know, the “Blood Libel” was a term to describe the charge which began in Medieval Europe that Jews have been sacrificing Christian children to use their blood in rituals. These charges have long been utilized by critics of Catholicism to “prove” the inherrent anti-semtism rampant within the church.

But now, a prominint rabinical Jewish scholar Elio Toaff has concluded that these claims are actually based on fact.

Christians don’t know how to give an Old Testament bible study without the use of the New Testament. Most believers don’t realize that the early church was mostly comprised of Jews who were converted and came to believe in Jesus because of the witness of the Old Testament to Jesus as the Messiah.

The sooner the body of Christ (Messiah) realizes that and repents of her attitude toward the Hebrew roots of her faith that she is only “grafted in” to the true olive tree and sheds her Augustinian, Hellenized, Neo-platonic, pseudo-gnostic teachings that twist and distort the true meanings of Scripture…the better.

The work of the mass media, controlled by people with vested interest can be pretty effective in influencing world opinion. The kind of subtle damage control activity can to some extent obscure the actual happening of things.

Maybe you should answer this question first: did it happen or did it not at any time in history? Never mind whether it’s rampant or not.

and what’s the wisdom of bringing in the Arabs into this issue? Other than to dampen the thrust of the OP assertion, I can only see side stepping of the issue at hand.

In any case, with both hands have been bloodied with blood, there is no clear cut solution to the Arab-Israeli issue. (puns unintended).

The idea that we must give a homeland to certain race is nonsence except for the excuse to grab the land that belonged to others. If we do that, just imagine how many races that do not have their so-called homeland?

The work of the mass media, controlled by people with vested interest can be pretty effective in influencing world opinion. The kind of subtle damage control activity can to some extent obscure the actual happening of things.
