What is the Jewish concept of hell? I have read things like, Jews don’t believe in hell, they believe in a temporary hell for 12 months or so, etc. Is there an official position? What is it? I keep coming across different answers online, so I thought it best to maybe ask someone who might know more than me.

Jews believe in something of a “purgatory,” just not in those terms. Orthodox Jews hold that one is purified after death for as long as twelve months, in which one is encouraged to pray for and make intercession for the deceased.

While they may not believe in Gehenna per se, one can easily see the similarities between this belief and certain tenants of the Catholic faith as well.

Peace
