Jewish group wants Mormons to stop proxy baptisms

I don’t want this thread to get off track or anything, I’m just asking this question for my own research.

What scripture (not the Book of Mormon) do Mormons use to justify baptism of the dead?

I think this Jewish group ought to find something more important to worry about than Mormon proxy baptisms. Maybe they could spend more of their time helping the poor or perhaps even trying to help protect living Jews in Israel. The Mormon effort is the equivalent of praying for the dead. Do Jews take offense at Catholics praying for Holocaust victims?

I disagree in that Mormon activities are a level or two beyond simply praying for the dead. I don’t think that anybody would disagree that a person standing in proxy of a dead perosn and getting batpisms, confirmations, sealings and endowments on their behalf is more involved than praying for their wellbeing in purgatory.
