Ok, I read where a prominent religious Israeli lawmaker tore up the New Testament (I posted the link below). This isn’t the first story I have read about things like this happening with these people (intolerance). I just like to point this out because it seems that most Christians view Jews as being all perfect and are quick to defend them no matter what. The fact is they turned their back on Jesus on don’t even recognize him as the Son of God so in my opinion. In my opinion, I don’t view the Jewish religion any differently from Islam or any other for that matter.
Don’t take this wrong I am not bashing the people. I know some Jewish people who are very nice, good people. I’m just speaking in terms of the religion and the apparent intolerance that comes with it. Don’t repeatedly do disrespectful things like this and expect everyone to just keep remaining quiet.

Let’s keep in mind that this is the action of one person and not the action by numerous people. I think we can all admit that we will find intolerance by people of all faiths, and while its a very disrespectful thing to do, in my opinion I think that type of behavior exhibited by the Israeli lawmaker is not a common problem nor is it condoned by his government.

One would hope that all people would treat each other charitably and respect for their beliefs.

Goes to show that it isn’t just American politicians and preachers who grandstand. I suppose the deepest offense I could do against this one would be to NOT tear up the Old Testament.
Compared to some of the things Christians have said about and done to Jews throughout history, this seems rather tame.
True, though his actions are rather silly. I wonder if the missionary group actually sent him an entire Bible, and he either accidentally ripped up the OT or carefully removed it, set it reverently to the side, and then ripped up only the NT.

The intolerance of this religious Israeli lawmaker does not come from the Jewish religion, contrary to what you state. It does come from the individual’s distortion of the teaching of the religion, just as Catholics and other Christians who have acted in a similar manner have distorted the teaching of their religion. The behavior of this man should be, and has been, condemned by the Israeli government as well as all of us. But we shouldn’t use this or similar incidents as a rationale to condemn Judaism as a religion.

Well I agree with the Church on about 98% of things but on the other hand God gave me some sense as well. I’ve been to the Middle East (Iraq and Jordan) and spent over 2 years in Iraq. I’ve seen how most Muslims are. Maybe you would feel differently had you been through some of my experiences as well.

Most Muslims don’t even live in Iraq and Jordan. And the middle east only has a small percentage of Muslims in the world. Only 1.9% of Muslims live in Iraq, and .4% live in Jordan. Only 20% of Muslims live in Arab nations.

And even of the ones who do live in Iraq and Jordan only a small percentage are violent extremists. The rest are victims of those extremists.

So while you say that you’ve “seen how most Muslims are” the numbers show quite the opposite. You’ve seen a very small percentage of a huge, worldwide population.

I think the real lesson is that people who look for reasons to be provoked into intemperate actions or words will always find them.

But in most Muslim majority countries, there is also a similar cultural current. Some non-Muslim Arabic cultural norms, not even mentioned in the Quran are held in non-Arab, Muslim majority nations.

And just what is your experience in Muslim majority countries? I spent 1 year in Afghanistan, and close to the same in Iraq.

This is high political theatre by a minority party member (National Union) known for its pretty extreme views, and from an individual with ties to banned parties (Kach), and follower of a pretty controversial figure (Kahane).

He’s a fringe character who isn’t very popular in his own country, and certainly isn’t a fan of Catholics or Christianity.

To speak out and say it isn’t right. And if the Jewish religion is so tolerant then other Jewish leaders should come out and denounce this kind of behavior. If a priest burned a Tora or a Koran what do you think would happen?
why don’t you pray for him. If someone is that angry that they are going to destroy the religious book of someone else, they aren’t worth the time or day. Considering the HSS mandate and that Catholics and Christians are mocked in our culture at every turn we have bigger battles on our hand. We had in the Detroit area that lone pastor from Florida coming in to Dearborn to burn Korans. It went no where. Jews are our elder brothers in the faith. Because one behaves badly is minor here.

I have no long documents full of fancy, eloquent, political correct words meant to please anyone, I only have this:

[BIBLEDRB]1 John 2:23[/BIBLEDRB]

You know, I’ve been on these boards for awhile now and I’ve never seen anyone describe the catechism as a long, eloquent, politically correct document meant to please others. In fact, I own a catechism, and I could point to several politically incorrect passages. So please, show some respect to it on a Catholic website.

You have that bible verse, yes. But it does not speak to how the Catholic church views Judaism and Islam. As I’m sure you’re aware church tradition is equal in weight to scripture. Your approach is actually very protestant.

It has been said well enough already, we should pray for this individual, not retaliate. We should not blame “Jews” as a whole. The response has been clear that the community as a whole does not support this sort of stuff.

I do agree with a few of the posters though, there is too much fetishization (is that a word? I’m declaring it one if it isn’t) of Judaism in the West.

i see, another Catholic deciding they know better than Holy Mother Church.
Stop being a drama queen, it’s one small issue. If I don’t agree with the church on Islam it doesn’t make me a bad Catholic. I will always respect the churches opinion and value it.

Maybe it was the New World Translation? I’m going to have a pork chop tonight and pray for him, One person, I wouldn’t start throwing stones. 😉

Do you know what the Church Fathers write about it? And I didn’t talk about the *whole *catechism.
So just part of the catechism is a politically correct document to make others feel good?

I don’t follow the catechism, obviously. But I don’t doubt the sincerity of the beliefs, outlooks, attitudes, and behaviors outlined in it.

Furthermore, while you may disagree with the Catholic church you cannot argue about its teachings in regards to other Abrahamic religions when it is outlined so clearly in the catechism.

No, Nostra Aetate is not a bad document but implying that islam is somehow salvific is hard to agree to.

We absolutely can. If it doesn’t say what people misinterpret it to say.
