PORTLAND, Ore. — An applicant for a professor job claims in a lawsuit that a small private Christian liberal arts college in Portland discriminated against him by refusing to hire him because he’s Jewish.
In the lawsuit filed in Multnomah County Circuit Court, Noel M. King said he applied for an adjunct professor of psychology position at Warner Pacific College in April 2014. On his application, he said, he indicated he adheres to the Hebrew faith.
Oregon law states it is not an unlawful employment practice for a bona fide church or other religious institution to prefer an applicant of one religious sect or persuasion over another.

He claims to have lost other opportunities because he was being strung along.

Well, then, every job applicant could sue every time they applied for a job. An application form or an interview is not a promise of employment. Even after an interview, a candidate is usually given a written job offer, which they can take it or leave it.

Nothing is settled until there is an agreement. There are many times we should not “burn our bridges” and looking for a job is one of those situations.

Perhaps he is unaware of the law. Maybe the school did not express their expectations clearly enough.

This lawsuit is ridiculous and potentially damaging.

If the school should be sued, it should be sued for being stupid. Religious colleges have the right to require religious qualifications.

However, I’m really starting to think that there some dense people running religious schools across America. They need to set their hiring and morality clauses now. A Jewish person should not be interviewed for 4 months before the president has to step in and say “Christians only.”

The hiring people should know this upfront. They have to set rules so they don’t get themselves into these lawsuits.

Also, what kind of person only interviews for 1 job at a time??? How does this person loose other opportunities because this college didn’t hire him. If he was offered another job, he should have taken it. If he had a preference and wanted this job, he could have quit the other job once he received the job he wanted. Or if he wasn’t willing to do that, that’s the chances you take when you don’t accept your first job offer.

But again, religious schools need to tighten up their religious and morality requirements before they are bitten by them - and some liberal judge sets a very bad precedent.

God Bless
