I hd never heard of this before but found it a really interesting article:

"A group of right-wing Jewish activists reenacted a religious ritual from the First Temple period at the Shiloah Spring in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan Tuesday night, with the goal of removing Prime Minister Ariel Sharon from power and instituting a Jewish monarchy.

With shofars blasting in the background, the group – led by Prof. Hillel Weiss, a well-known Temple Mount activist and a lecturer on literature at Bar-Ilan University, and Rabbi Yosef Dayan, who recently threatened to instigate a death curse against Sharon – conducted the nisuah hamayim ritual, which they said “will begin the process of removing the secular Israeli government.”

“This ceremony will lay the foundations for instituting a Jewish king, a Jewish court, and the Third Temple,” Weiss told the 40 participants sitting near the Shiloah Spring. “We will draw inspiration and strength from the ceremony as the holy priests did in Temple times, and we will ensure that the Jewish people will not be removed from their land.”

Standing next to the running water, said to also be used in Temple times to spiritually cleanse the high priest during the Yom Kippur services, Dayan blew the shofar while Weiss collected holy water.

“The purpose of the ceremony is to remove the current government, and in order to do so we need to draw strength from the pools of salvation,” Weiss said. “If we want to make a revolution, then we need to change the course of the winds blowing among the people.”

It is my belief that the Jewish leaders tried to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem at the time of St Cyril the Bishop of Jerusalem. He warned the leaders that God would not permit this symbol of a past covenant to be rebuilt. Three times they began work on the structure and three times fire came up from the ground and killed the workmen.

If they rebuild the temple it would give a strong indication of “the abomination of desolation.” What could be more desolate then the symbol of a fulfilled covenant which is still waiting to be fulfilled.

Prof. Weiss & Rabbi Dayan are well-known extremists whose popular and rabbinic following is in inverse proportion to the publicity that they have a penchant for generating for themselves. They take themselves far more seriously than anyone else does.

The order of offerings on a regular basis ceased in CE 70, when the Romans destroyed the Second Temple. It was briefly reinstituted during the Bar Kokhba revolt against Rome (in CE 132-135, see us-israel.org/jsource/biography/Kokhba.html). There are vague hints that it may have been reinstituted for an even shorter period during the brief reign of the Roman Emperor Julian (“the Apostate”) in CE 361-363 (see jewishencyclopedia.com/view.jsp?artid=716&letter=J&search=Julian the Apostate ). It probably was reinstituted for a short time after CE 614, when the Sassanid Persians captured Jerusalem from the Byzantines & turned the city over to us. But this interlude came to an end when the Byzantines retook the city a few years later. Since then, nada. :crying:

As our very great medieval sage Maimonedes (see us-israel.org/jsource/biography/Maimonides.html ) puts it:

“In the future, the King Messiah will stand up and restore the Davidic monarchy…build the Temple, gather the dispersed of Israel, and restore all the laws as they were in former times: offerings, sabbatical and jubilee years as they are commanded in the Torah.

We (orthodox Jews) pray daily for the restoration of the Temple! (See templeinstitute.org/main.html ).
