Jewish take on "Stone that the builders rejected"

What is/was the understanding of Jews on Psalm 118:22 “The stone that the builders have rejected has become the cornerstone.” Is it just a general saying to be applied whenever it fit, or was there a specific meaning usually associated with it?
 
In the literal sense, its supposed to be the stone of the New Temple that was being built in Ezra and Nehemiah. The Jews were lamenting the fact that the new Temple was much smaller than the one that Solomon built.

Psalm 118 is looking back at that event and forward to Christ, the Temple that will be destroyed and rebuilt in 3 days.

As to the prophetic sense, I don’t know if the Jews place any prophecy on these psalm verses.

If the statement is a lament, why then does the next verse say “it is wonderful in our eyes”?

I said the Jews were lamenting the fact that the Temple was nowhere near as large as the first Temple.

The divinely inspired Psalmist, however, sees it differently, for he is saying that the future Temple would be far greater than the one Solomon built.

I don’t think the Jews, or even the Psalmist, realize that the future Temple would be Jesus Christ.
