Why are there Jews at the Good Friday service- this makes no sense whatsoever. Pls. explain!

What do you mean when you say they were there? Like some sort of participation, or what?

They is no reason why they can’t attend, but they should not receive Eucharist, and I would assume they wouldn’t want to venerate the Cross, either.

By the way, why isn’t it called veneration of the Crucifix?

Because there is no Corpus on the Cross. A Crucifix has a Corpus on it. In every Good Friday service I have ever attended we have venerated a plain Cross.

Carolyn,
I don’t think that’s necessarily true- the pope venerated a crucifix at his Good Friday service.

Carolyn,

I went to a Good Friday service using the 1962 Missal here in Northeast Ohio --I see you’re in the same place-- and they used a Crucifix.

I was assuming the poster was referring to the veneration of the plain cross and wondering why it wasn’t called veneration of the Crucifix. I’ve never seen a Crucifix venerated on Good Friday, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen, I realize that. Just that I’ve never seen it in any of the parishes I’ve belonged to or where I’ve attended Good Friday services.

As far back as I can remember, I have always seen a Crucifix venerated on Good Friday.

I think it is possible that the term “the cross” as it pertains to veneration on Good Friday is pertaining to the action that Christ performed upon it, ie., the stations of the cross, or " behold the cross of the Lord. In referring to Christ’s cross, we generally don’t have to say, Christ’s crucifix. I believe it is all in the world of terminology.

Maybe to gripe at the Catholics for praying for their conversion? Apparently they’re pretty unhappy about that.

I’ve always seen a Crucifix. We kiss the feet. I guess I just assumed it would be a Crucifix so we can kiss on of the wounds of Christ.

Maybe they were there as self-appointed liturgical police to make sure the priest didn’t sneak in a prayer for their conversion.

they were probably spying, also to hear that prayer, you know, the one that upsets them every year.

Then there are Jews like me who couldn’t care less…because we ars secure enough in our own faith that what others think do not bother us (as long as they keep it to themselves and don’t shove it down our throats as bornagains do.)

HashemEchad, I am curious about something. Do Jews ever engage in conversion attempts like Christians do? Or is the Jewish faith just passed down through the generations?

No, only Islam and Chrisitianity engage in missionary work. We do not try to gain converts, but converts do come to us. We discourage them three times (Jewish Law requires this), to test their sincerity.

We do not believe someone needs to be Jewish to go to Heaven. We believe the ethical, moral, righteous people of all nations have a share in the World to Come.
