In the Gospel, it reads “the only way to the Father is through me”. But the jews dont beleave in jesus as our savior, they beleave he was a profet, nothing more…doesent that kind of say “all jews are not going to heaven because they dont beleave jesus is God?” along with other religions such as islam…when the Gospels were written, how do we know that the authors wernt infouneced to attack the jews because the apostols didnt care for the jews because of what they did to jesus. though jesus sufferd by a Roman…it was they jews who wantes him killed…

This is just my personal opinion but as the Jews are God’s Chosen People - I think it’s fairly obvious where they’re going. 🙂

Considering all the bad stuff they got into in the Old Testament and yet were STILL forgiven… I think they’ll be okay.

how can you say the Apostles didn’t care for the Jews when they themselves were Jews?

nicky,

There are a number of God’s chosen people described in the Bible for which serious doubt would arise as to whether they would be in Heaven. The Chosen People don’t have a “once saved, always saved” position.

I agree. Jesus, and the apostles, clearly loved those who were Jews, in that they all were, Jesus was, Mary was, and thousands of early Christians were.

It is true, the Jews ARE God’s Chosen People-even to this day.

Yet, we Gentiles have Joined them (as God’s Chosen).

2 Covenants with the Same God.
A Covenant is a Covenant.

We’re just under the New Covenant, Jesus Christ.
As Scripture explains, He came unto His Own, and they knew Him not.

In the Divine Mercy In My Soul Diary, to Sister Faustina-it was explained that God’s Mercy is extended to each soul at its Judgement (as soon as the person dies).

If the soul accepts God’s Mercy-no matter what the Religion or lack of in the world-it is “saved.” Thing is, when that person sees its soul ~through God’s Eyes~ what they did, said and how they acted towards others in their lifetime.

God is Love. Jesus explained the “New Commandment” of Love-to Love each other as He loved them.

Love your Neighbor as yourself.

Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta taught:
motherteresathecaseforthecause.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html

***“It does not matter to me what religious path a person chooses to follow. Inspired by Mother Teresa of Calcutta, my resolve is to help the Christian be the best Christian they can be… to help the Muslim or Sikh to be the best Muslim or Sikh they can be… to help the Buddhist or Pagan be the best Buddhist or Pagan they can be… and to help the atheist, agnostic, or deist to be the best atheist, agnostic or deist they can be.”

Mother Teresa taught:

“I’ve always said we should help a Hindu become a better Hindu, a Muslim become a better Muslim, a Catholic become a better Catholic” (Mother Teresa: The Case for The Cause, 29).

“I convert you to be a better Hindu, a better Catholic, Muslim, Jain, or Buddhist” (Mother Teresa: The Case for The Cause, 4).***

Saint Padre Pio told his friend Maria Pyle to leave her (Baptist) mother alone, when she was trying to convert her to Catholicism. He said she was at peace with God.

***If they were in danger of losing their souls—wouldn’t Mother Teresa or Padre Pio want to convert them? After all, that was a HUGE part of their life! Saving Souls!!!

However—In the Catholic Faith, we have the Promise of the “Fullness of the True Faith.” The lion’s share of the Truth.

God Bless.

Your question is a very good one, but is complex and has several different aspects that need to be addressed.

The ordinary method of salvation is through the Catholic Church. That is the intention of Christ when he commanded his Apostles to baptize the nations and teach them to observe His commandments. However, this does not exclude those who, through no fault of their own, have never been exposed to authentic Catholic teaching and don’t recognize the Catholic Church to be the one which Christ founded. This is called “invincible ignorance.” Many of the more liberal-minded Catholics today tend to use this as a legal loophole to advocate the heresy of universal salvation, but invincible ignorance is very specific: it is an ignorance which exists through no fault of their own. Since it is a relatively easy matter in our time to research Catholicism and to contact one’s local parish priest for more information, there are very few cases in which ignorance can truly be invincible. Thus, the ordinary means of salvation, except in rare and extraordinary cases, is participation within the One, Holy. Catholic, and Apostolic Church.

It has been taught authoritatively that those who reject Christ and strive against his Church are excluded from salvation; for instance, Pope Pius IX said in his Quanto conficiamur moerore:

“But it is also a Catholic dogma, that no one outside the Catholic Church can be saved, and that those who are contumacious against the authority of the same Church [and] definitions and who are obstinately separated from the unity of this Church and from the Roman Pontiff, successor of Peter, to whom the custody of the vineyard was entrusted by the Savior, cannot obtain eternal salvation.”

Even those members in “invisible union” with the Catholic Church are at risk, since they do not have the infallible guidance of the Magisterium, nor the Sacraments to keep them living members:

“They who do not belong to the visible bond of the Catholic Church… [we ask them to] strive to take themselves from that state in which they cannot be sure of their own eternal salvation; for even though they are ordered to the mystical body of the Redeemer by a certain desire and wish of which they are not aware [implicit in the general wish to do what God wills], yet they lack so many and so great heavenly gifts and helps which can be enjoyed only in the Catholic Church.” (Pope Pius XII, Mystici Corporis)

And, as the letter from the Holy Office regarding Fr. Feeney’s heresies states, one must not only have explicit/implicit desire, but true charity to effect such an invisible union:

“But it must not be thought that any kind of desire of entering the Church suffices that one may be saved. It is necessary that the desire by which one is related to the Church be animated by perfect charity.”

Charity being a supernatural virtue, it would be nearly impossible to maintain perfect Charity without aid of the Sacraments and the many helps provided only through the Catholic Church.

Finally, we have the idea prevalent among the so-called Progressives that there is a “dual covenant,” wherein the Jews’ old covenant is still in effect alongside the eternal covenant of Christ. This is most probably a heresy, and is certainly bad theology. The old covenant of the Jews was a foreshadowing and prefiguring of the new and everlasting covenant of Christ. When the true covenant came into effect, the old was superseded because there was no longer any need for shadows and allegories. It is unthinkable and indeed absurd to hold the dogma of the Church, “Outside the Church, there is no salvation,” all the while holding that there is a separate covenant outside the Church which leads to salvation! Pope John Paul II explicitly stated in his Redemptoris Mater:

“Christ fulfills the divine promise and supersedes the old law.”

Our Pope, while Cardinal, also wrote:

“Thus the Sinai [Mosaic] Covenant is indeed superseded” (Many Religions – One Covenant, p. 70).

A fuller treatment of the topic can be found here:

catholicintl.com/articles/The%20Old%20Covenant%20Revoked%20or%20Not%20Revoked%20for%20Culture%20Wars.pdf

So, with these topics in mind, we can safely say that salvation is open to non-Catholics who fulfill the criteria of invincible ignorance, explicit desire (implicit in the case of invincible ignorance), and perfect Charity which links them in an invisible way with the Visible Body of Christ; but this is true only in extraordinary circumstances, and in our day and age, it would be very difficult if not virtually impossible for these conditions to be fulfilled due to the accessibility of the Catholic Church, and the difficulty of maintaining grace in our increasingly sinful culture. Even if these conditions were met, salvation would still be an uncertain matter. It’s best not to presume God’s mercy over his justice, and push for the ordinary participation within the Church to ensure the means of salvation are available.

In the case of Jews practicing Judaism, it would be virtually impossible unless they were to reject their religion. This is because their religion explicitly rejects Christ, the Church, and its Dogmas as an inherent principle of faith, views which close the door to salvation. Besides, it is not the religion which Christ founded, and is thus inherently deficient to begin with; salvation could only be obtained despite such a religion, not because of it. There is only one covenant which leads to salvation, and that is through Christ and the Church which he founded on Peter. Any alternative can’t be maintained without violating the dogma of the Church, “Extra Ecclesiam, Nulla Salus.”

Just my (fallible) opinions!

We know from Scripture that Elijah and Moses are in Heaven and they were Jews. We know that the Holy Innocents are in Heaven and they were Jews. We know that Saint John the Baptist and Saint Joseph are in Heaven and they were Jews. We know that Saint Dismas was in Heaven and he was a Jew.

All of these individuals were Jews and died without being sacramentally baptized into the Church (there was not yet Baptism when they all died).

Um, the Old Testament Jews were the “chosen people” precisely because they were “chosen” to bring forth the Messiah, who then offered salvation to Jew and gentile alike so long as they accept the fact that Jesus is Lord, and are baptized, etc. Since the first Pentecost the Catholic Church has been the “spiritual Jews” and everybody else (jews included) are the “gentiles”. The Jewish religion is not salvific; the Catholic Church is. Certain Jews (and protestants, muslims, buddhists, etc etc) may make it to heaven, but that’s because of God’s mercy, not because they are the “chosen people”. Christ said “I am the way…He who follows Me…” How do we follow him? By being members of His Catholic Church.

Elijah, Moses, and Joseph died at a time when Judaism was the true faith.

Saint John the Baptist was a Christian.

Saint Dismas died before Baptism was necessary (After Christs Ressurection).

Im pretty sure the Magisterium has issued an answer on the whole matter. These here examples were pretty self evident. 👍

Saint John the Baptist was a Christian.
Somebody in the know please chime in here if I am incorrect,
but GNG, I believe that you may be wrong.

John was a Jew. His father , Zechariah, was part of the priestly class of Abijah (see Luke 1:5-24), so this family was about as Jewish as you could get at the time. 😉

John announced the coming of the Messiah, but actually was murdered before Jesus was crucified, so John was never actually a “Christian” in the true sense of the word.

Ah, forgive me.

In that case, John The Baptist was alive in a time before Baptism was necessary though.

🙂

I guess in the sense that we, as Catholics, understand the sacrament, you are correct.🙂
But, for arguments sake, John was “the Baptizer”, so in theory, I guess we could say that he understod that there was a need, so in some ways is the “Father” of our sacrament of baptism, so he must be in heaven! 😉

Oh but with God all things are possible.

I’m sure, as others have noted, we know that Moses, Elijah, all the prophets and many characters in the Old Testament are in Heaven… and so, by deduction, we know that ordinary good Jews/Israelites also must have found their way to Heaven also.

I find ‘invincible ignorance’ a tricky thing to define. After all, what does it mean to “know” that the Catholic Church is the True Church founded by Christ for the Salvation of humanity? Yes, information about the Catholic Church is widely available (as is information about Protestant Christianity, Judaism, Islam, etc.). Someone may have heard/read that Catholicism is the True Church, but does that mean they really “know” it to be true?

Dictionary.com gives the following definitions for “know”:
to perceive or understand as fact or truth; to apprehend clearly and with certainty: I know the situation fully.
2.
to have established or fixed in the mind or memory: to know a poem by heart; Do you know the way to the park from here?
3.
to be cognizant or aware of: I know it.
4.
be acquainted with (a thing, place, person, etc.), as by sight, experience, or report: to know the mayor.
5.
to understand from experience or attainment (usually fol. by how before an infinitive): to know how to make gingerbread.
6.
to be able to distinguish, as one from another: to know right from wrong.
Depending on which definition the Church uses determines how broad invincible ignorance is. If Definition 1 is used, then most non-Catholics fall into invincible ignorance since they do not perceive the Catholic Church to be what it claims to be. If, however, Definition 3 or 4 is used, then most Non-Catholics (esp. in the Western countries) are royally screwed.

According the visions of St. Bridget, those Jews and even pagans who were not Christian through any fault of theirs, yet who served God in a spirit of faith and charity, were entering Heaven while many Christian prelates descended into Hell for their many sins. Her visions received ecclesiastical approbation and she of course was canonized.

I am constantly amazed at the number of people who seem preoccupied with OTHER people’s salvation. You must all be saints. I, OTOH, have enough to do to keep my OWN feet on the straight & narrow.
