I have been challenged lately by a non-Catholic Christian concerning some statements our former Pope Bl. JPll made concerning the Jews, that their wait for the Messiah “is legitimate.” Upon doing some research, I found some perplexing statements made not just by Bl. JPll, but by then Cardinal Ratzinger and the pope’s spokesman.
Joaquín Navarro-Valls, the pope’s spokesman said “…it would be wrong for a Catholic to wait for the Messiah, but not for a Jew.” (see NY Times Article, nytimes.com/2002/01/18/world/vatican-says-jews-wait-for-messiah-is-validated-by-the-old-testament.html)
If I am understanding this rightly, it seems to go well beyond dispelling anti-semitism, even so far as validating the Jewish people’s rejection of Christ as Messiah - His life, His crucifixion, death, and resurrection for the salvation of the world. Furthermore, this spokesman stated that this is now official church doctrine. Can someone please explain this?
