hi all,

this audio of the new and old testament which is based on the NKJV bible. Raymond Arroyo was a co producter from EWTN on this project.

my question is i’ve always understood that we should read only a Catholic bible. Again, Raymond Arroyo is/was a co producer of the above mentioned. As a Catholic, are we allowed to read or listen to a NKJV bible, case in point the above mentioned audio bible?

Also, is this backed by the Catholic Church, being that Raymond is behind it and i also saw the word of promise on the Catholic Digest website?

You need to provide some links for us as I’m sure you don’t have all the info. We can’t comment unless we are familiar with what you are talking about.

That said, the KJV is based on the Douay Rheims, and included the missing books of the protestant Bibles at one time, so it’s possible, but you need to give us links to where we can get more info on the project.

  1. EWTN (Raymond Arroyo’s employer) is a private company. EWTN is not affiliated with the Vatican and therefore, by extension, not “the Catholic Church” any more than Catholic Answers would be.
  2. Catholic Digest: ditto. A private company. It’s not “the Catholic Church.” Furthermore, a lot of Catholics don’t like Catholic Digest because it’s too “liberal”, so there’s your answer to that question.
  3. Jim Cavaziel may have recorded it in between takes for the remake of “The Prisoner,” which is on either IFC or Sundance Channel in a few days. Maybe he finished it afterwards, I dunno. The point being, if IFC has him snagged for publicity for “The Prisoner” remake, he probably won’t have much time to promote this NKJV translation.

It looks to me to be more of an “ecumenical” audio Bible… suitable for all denominations. However, perhaps you should address the question if it’s safe for Catholics to the “Ask An Apologist” section. They might know more about it.

Sorry about that, but it is a good idea to ask the Apologist here on the Forums.

It actually looks to me like it would be a good audio Bible, and at $23 for the digital download, it’s not bad for the NT.

I’ll try and keep an eye out on the apologist section, however, if they do answer your question (and it may take a few days, so try not to get impatient in the meantime) let us know here on the thread.

First…The Church **does **not prohibit us from reading/studying/praying with the NKJV (or any of the Protestant derivative bibles…they all are Catholic Bibles minus 7 OT books and a few chapters to a couple of the OT books that they do have).

Second…You are right though, that as a Catholic we SHOULD us a Catholic Bible (e.g., New American Bible) or a Catholic Edition (e.g, RSV-CE)…but the Church does not say that we*** MUST**…*use a Catholic Bible/Catholic Edition.

Third…here is the website for Word of Promise…with a excerpt of their mission/vision. My take on your questions…they are dramatizing the readings with actors…and they are legitimate and doing an excellent job…it really helps for Lectio Divina (reading…mediating…praying…contemplating) method of scripture.

I could not find anything in the Catechism or the USCCB (US Bishops website) that said anything about “Catholics are not allowed or must not to use a Protestant bible”.

I have the New Testament and love it. I have listened to it twice through so far. I wouldn’t get too hung up on versions when the Bible is listened to straight through like this. The differences in translation are so minor as to be almost legligible in an audio format. What is of greater concern is whether the translation is dynamic or literal. The most literal translations make for the best study while the more dynamic translations lend themselves to projects like this.

But I thought the KJV was a literal translation, not dynamic. :confused:

ewtn are not actual catholics as far as i know but thats beside the point. the new revised standard was written as a revision to kjv nsrv is also more catholic in translation than the new american standard and easier to read. the only bible i would really refrain from as a catholic is the niv its pretty usless

Yeah, that Pontifical Award that Mother Angelica and Deacon Bill got really showed the world how much the Pope dislikes EWTN’s anti-Catholic theology. :rolleyes:

Anyway, I have a NAB and a NIV. I don’t use the NIV too much, and the only reason I got the NAB is because it’s a “red letter edition”, because I like to browse the words of Jesus quickly. Having the red print really helps if I’m trying to locate a quote. The only reason I got the NIV is because I couldn’t find a Catholic Bible at that time.

I’d like to get an Ignatius Bible, though.
