I can’t stand Jimmy Buffet. … If I hear “Cheese Burger In Paradise” one more time, I’m gonna be sick! …But seriously, I listen to Heavy Metal music and the lyrics do not agree with my Catholic faith more than 95% of the time. I have just learned to ignore the lyrical content. …
Hi Jon, I am not a Heavy Metal fan, :o but I think you get the point here :yup: Some folks seem to take things too seriously 😉 Buffetts music was ment to be laied back fun. I’ll crank up Jimmy B. on my iPod, You crank up Metallica on yours & we’ll toast while watching the sunset over the water 😃

I think some people can listen to that kind of music and just ignore it and be fine. However, personally, I have found that I really have to stay away from mostly everything secular. For some reason, I suppose I am not good at ignoring it, and it does get to me and greatly weakens me towards sin. Its rather boring sometimes, but I guess whatever you have to do. I really have to take St. Pauls words that I have in my signature seriously:o .

I see a bit more Christianity in JBs music if you read between the lines and listen to more than the three songs they play on the radio. There is a lot of poking fun at everyday life, rememberence of those that went before, sharing the company of friends, and individuals dealing with the trials and tribulations of life.

His music is not praise or worship music and it does deal with subject matter that is a part of daily life. The “life style” is what you make of it. I see the desire for a simplistic lifestyle and respect for one another.

He was actually raised Catholic. He was an altar boy.
True. He and my dad were good friends and served together at St. Joseph’s Chapel at Spring Hill College in Mobile.

They also played a lot of Monopoly together.

My high school roomie was a JB fan. She was within feet of him at a concert and hollered my dad’s name. He responded that he used to beat him at monopoly. 🙂

nuff said.

🙂

Ok, not enough said. Yes, some of the people at the concerts get weird. These are not the true buffett fans. The true buffett fans are the ones with the small little grill in the parking lot, the CD player loaded up with every CD, the couple of drinks, not CASES of drinks, well over the age of 30 or nearly there, with all their clothes on. Singing along, having a good time. The girls in the parking lot falling over drunk do not represent the Buffett fans. AT ALL.

Jimmy went to the same Catholic high school my daughters did, and is about 5 years older than dh and I. We have several friends who went to school with him and they talk about how he always had his guitar with him, to everyone’s annoyance. Little did they know!

I still hear a certain affinity for things Catholic in some of his songs, but he has certainly become an emblem for a libertine, laid-back lifestyle (very typical of the coastal area here.) He is an extremely savvy businessman.

His sister has a restaurant down in Gulf Shores on the Intracoastal Waterway - great place for eating wonderful shrimp and listening to music.

I’d love to see him fully embrace Catholicism again.

I have several CD’s by him including the one he did with various country stars.

It is almost impossible to tickets to his concerts. The one here in June sold out almost immediately.

As for the Parrotheads, probably came from one concert years ago and it took off (pun intended).

As for Jimmy Buffet, he seems to be always busy so his lifestyle is not that laid back. More like, he does not let things get to him.

One of his songs did teach me a bit about the religion: Fruit Cakes. I am under 40 so I didn’t understand the whole tapping chest thing my dad did during mass but no one else did. Then Jimmy said "Mea Culpa Mea Culpa Mea Maxima Culpa
Mea Culpa Mea Culpa Mea Maxima Culpa " during the song and I looked it up and learned about and adopted the tradition of beating chests in conjunction with the Consecration.

Wish us luck since we are going to our first concert this summer. It also sold out instantly but a coworker got some extra tickets. I figure this would be a good year to go as I am looking at 40 myself.

I know this thread is really old, but I thought I would give my opinions:
I love Jimmy Buffett. There was a time where my whole iPod was just his songs, ending with a CD recorded live in Hawai’i. Some of his songs had some Catholic things in it, and today I found this:
books.google.com/books?id=BM58F-yOS3IC&pg=PA50&lpg=PA50&dq=is+jimmy+buffett+still+catholic%3F&source=bl&ots=u-611fGYnD&sig=E3FMf8HTIgrKO3-40BDBfIxswBw&hl=en&ei=NrhPSrLUIpWltgeWvei0BA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4
Page 50, one of the brothers who taught him (I think?) believes he still considers himself a Catholic, if he had to write something down-and he did once, for Who’s Who in America.
In other words, he still at least considers himself to be a Catholic somewhat.

Huge Jimmy Buffett fan here.

There is a show (documentary, biography? I don’t know) but I have seen it on CMT and it goes through Jimmy’s career with interviews with Jimmy peppered throughout.

Jimmy himself talks about the Parrotheads, saying he really doesn’t know where that part came from. He indicated in as nice a way as he could that he doesn’t “get it” about the parrot head hats and paraphanelia his fans come to his concerts with. However, he said, more power to them.

His shop in Margaritaville carries all that stuff but the parrotheads came first, and the businessman in Jimmy saw that he could capitalize on it. He reasoned that they’ve got to buy all those crazy hats and beach balls somewhere, so why not from Margaritaville!!!

He also talks about how he doesn’t party like he used to - and certainly not as his songs imply!

So he is basically a workaholic businessman/musician who knows how to write a helluva song!! At least that’s what I got out of the biography.

“…yes I am a pirate
born 200 years too late
the canons don’t thunder
there’s nothin’ to plunder
I’m an over 40 victim of fate…”😃
I like Buffett’s music, too.
I think that after a day’s work there’s nothing wrong with popping open a cold one and
listening to Jimmy’s music.
I didn’t know about his store but I agree he’s an excellent businessman and a fine
songwriter.
I seem to remember that the government shot down his plane or something and he
wrote a song about it?
Or am I completely fabricating that?

Before he moves on I wish he would come out with a compilation albumn of his songs remade with out the foul language. . . Probably the only drawback to his music is that you can’t play it at a church picnic.

Yeah the govt shot at his plane, they thought it was carrying drugs or something illegal. It wasn’t. I believe he wrote a song about it.

You’re correct. His plane was shot at by Jamaican police in 1996. Bono was apparently on board, as well. The plane was mistaken for a drug runner’s plane.

i generally agree with this statement. i see a lot of this modern music as risky or at the very most a lesser good than, say, Gregorian Chant music. i feel as if i can get into Classical Music or Gregorian Chant music so why take the risk with this modern music?

Yes, i went through a Jimmy Buffett period in my life and i only later realized the significance of those words “Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa”.
