Jimmy Carter: Democrats Should Abandon Pro-Abortion Position

It would have nice if President Carter had enunciated such a policy while he was president. .
My parents used to be stauch Dem voters. They voted specifically FOR Jimmy Carter, as they felt that an Southern Baptist would do more to help overturn Roe v Wade than the clearly pro-choice Ford.

They were sorely disappointed. They voted for Reagan for the same reason in 1980 and have voted solidly GOP since.

I’m glad Carter came out and said this, but I doubt it will have much real impact on the Democratic parties veiws on abortion, they have been entrenching themselves further and further into their stance… I also wonder if Carter actually believe they are going to far, or if he just think public opinion is swaying away from the parties views, and wants them to reel back a bit to maintain their power base. Either way could you image the good that could be done if the money given to the abortion industry was spent instead on preserving life?

And what good has it done for the pro-life organizations to be spending on Republicans? Oh sure they can vote against any health care laws, it’s almost always politically safe to vote no or vote pro-status quo, but how many have even supported Ron Paul’s Sanctity of Life bills or repeal Roe vs Wade?

I’m not sure what my statement having to do with spending the money that is currently spent on abortion being spent on preserving life had to do with the Republican party… I’m an independent and honestly couldn’t possiblely care less about either party. The simple fact is that Democrats have become more and more pro-abortion as time has gone on. To the same effect Republicans have become more and more pro-life as time has gone on. Of course not all of them to the same degree, and not all of them vote yes for every piece of pro-life legislation that passes across their desk, but any movement in the right direction should be applauded…

Thanks for bringing about that little bit of history. If I remember right, Ford beat out Reagan, who was seen as the pro-abortion candidate himself around that time. But Reagan changed his own position later and beat Carter.

So maybe now Carter sees the political mood changing in that same pro-life direction.

Yes, really. If he were Republican (and it sounds like you are too), you’d probably be defending him. No?

Romney’s an admitted pro-choicer and pro-war but he’s given the benefit of the “doubt” (as was Reagan) so what’s wrong with the “blue dog” Democrats? (I believe there were 64 of them in the last Congress.)

My district had a pro-lifer run against the Republican heavy but could only raise $16,000; it is going to be a tough battle getting these Democrat pro-lifers (and keeping them) in office. Maybe this will be a start in that direction.
No, I am not a Republican - I am an ardent pro-life Catholic. And no matter how you look at it, in the end, politics won Stupak over rather than a moral principle.

btw - I, in no way, believe Romney to be pro-life either.

I voted for Carter myself for much the same reason. Later I kept hearing about various Carter pro-abortion appointees to the Federal judiciary. Already the Democratic party was falling in line with the pro-aborts but it took us awhile to realize it. It’s only gotten worse since.

To say the Democratic Party currently supports abortion “without limits” is simply the interjection of language to get an emotional response in the reader, to imply late-term abortions and whatever other bogeyman it might conjure up. It discredits the Life News site and shows it to be a political site first and a pro-life site second. Nowhere in the Dem. party platform does it say it favors expansion on current Federal law, which is quite conservative in terms of federal funding of abortions:
Federal law requires that states cover abortions under Medicaid in the event of rape, incest, and life endangerment, but bans the use of federal Medicaid funds for any other abortions.

U.S. laws also ban federal funding of abortions for Federal employees and their dependents, Native Americans covered by the Indian Health Service, military personnel and their dependents, and women with disabilities covered by Medicare.
