So I heard JJ Abrams is directing the next Star Wars film. While I am not completely happy about this I am not really disappointing either. It is kind of odd that he is going to be both the director of the new Star Wars movies as well as Star Trek. It odd because they kind of compete against each other to a certain extent. However it will also be hard for him to sort of jungle to huge movie franchises.

Now I enjoyed the latest 2009 Star Trek film. It was fairly well done though it did deviate from the slower moving formula Star Trek usually uses. I wasn’t a huge fan of the time-travel idea either but JJ didn’t write the script.

Back to Star Wars I just hope he doesn’t use shaky cam, I really despise that. Anyhow I am looking forward to it, glad Lucas is off the directors chair. 👍

A new Star Wars movie? What can they possibly write about now? Maybe the Clone Wars like the TV series? The three “prequel” Star Wars were pretty bad, putting it mildly. The Empire Strikes Back is where it’s at. (I’m a huge fantasy and SF fan, both on the screen and in books, even if I read little fiction these days.)

Star Trek > Star Wars, and Star Wars > Star Trek.

It depends on which you talk about. TOS was alright. TNG sucked (it got better in later seasons as the “1980s Touchy-Feely Therapy Culture” receded). DS9 was excellent. Voyager was good but jumped the shark about 1/4 through it’s run. Enterprise was excellent, I think, up there with DS9 - it’s a toss-up between them for “Best Star Trek”.

Now, Episodes IV-VI were good to excellent. Episodes I-III were horrible to mediocre. So, if one compares TNG to Episode IV, Star Wars > Star Trek. If one compares DS9 or Enterprise to Episode II, Star Trek > Star Wars. If one compares TNG to Episode I, well, Star Trek = Star Wars.

JJ Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek was decent (God knows it was better than any Trek film since First Contact at the latest), but not Wrath of Khan or Voyage Home good. JJ Abrams’ directing (if he did Transformers like I think) is a bit too slick, gimmicky, and commercial for me; such directing goes over well only if it’s lampshaded (think Quentin Tarantino).

Now, Gene Rodenberry’s Andromeda (except for Season 5) is better than (Gene Rodenberry’s) Star Trek, and Star Wars. Babylon 5 and Andromeda dominate in a competition between themselves and ST or SW. Not to mention Andromeda has Lexa Doig in it. Stargate is awesome - all three of them, the original, Atlantis, and Universe. Blake’s 7 is also good, as is Doctor Who - I love Doctor Who, even the new ones - except some of the new Doctor Who is overtly anti-religious (and multi-culti: it is made by the BBC, after all). For lesser-known SF, Lexx (no connection to aforementioned Lexa Doig: a German-Canadian production of the late 1990s or early 2000s) is quite good.

There’s an incredible amount of material that can be used. The Expanded Universe is the name for all that material.

JJ Abrams did not direct any of the Transformer films, your thinking Michael Bay.

On regards to the news, I was very surprised when I found out he was directing it. I’m a bit curious whether this is just a one time thing. Will they get a new director for every film, and if not, will Abrams have difficulty directing the next Star Trek?
Anywho, the lens flares will probably look cool on the light sabers, or maybe they’ll be really annoying, who knows.

I did get them confused - I actually like JJ Abrams’ style, in Star Trek. It’s Michael Bay’s style that doesn’t work, and all of my previous comments apply to.

I’ll have to read about the Expanded Universe. Looks interesting.

I’m happy about this. I loved what he did with Star Trek, respectful of what came before and charting a new course at the same time.

The thing about Star Trek is traditionally they are slower paced films. JJ Abrams made them more sped up and action paced more like Star Wars. He admitted he was never a fan of Star Trek but is a fan of Star Wars. While I enjoyed the new Star Trek film it isn’t really what Star Trek is all about.

I don’t mind the idea of him directing Star Wars, I just really hope he can lay off the shaky cam. I really think Shaky cam detracts from pretty much all films. It especially would be off in a fantasy film like Star Wars.

Anyhow many people seem to not want another Star Wars film after the prequels. I disagree completely, there is soooo much that can be done with Star Wars. Whether its bringing back the old cast or just doing a completely new story.(expanding universe anyone?)

I have never heard of him. Then I thought the same as you after hearing he directed and is directing Star Trek and Star Wars movie. Trying to bring unity among the fans of two different competing franchises. Though maybe someone (Disney/Star Wars and Star Trek) are trying to get Star Wars fan to be more interested in Star Trek and vice versa.

Wonder if there will be a spin off joke movie (like Spaceballs) Star Wars vs Star Trek lol.

Here is a link that list all of the Star Wars novels. They are very good and interesting. Let me know if you need recommendation on where to start.

I’ve never been a Treky, but yet i’m a Star Wars NERD…go figure 🤷. I really don’t know alot about JJ Abrams, now that Disney owns Lucas Films, I just hope the next Star Wars flick isn’t computerized like Cars and Toy Story was.

I want to see Harrison Ford back as Han Solo.
Harrison originally wanted Han solo to die. Also, I remember an interview I watched with him and he considered it a “thin role” (can’t remember exactly what he said, but it was a question about if he’d play Han Solo again if he had a chance). He’s also getting up there…he’s NOT young anymore. Carrie is in her 50s and Mark is at least 60 or 61. Mark’s son Nathan could probably play Luke (I saw a picture of him and he looks like his dad).

I thought the only thing we knew about the film is that it will take place substantially after Return of the Jedi? The ages of the actors would be just right in that case.

Or the characters could be loooong dead and are the stuff of legends for all we know.

It depends on how canonical they want to make the expanded universe. One novel takes place *immediately *after RotJ. Significant characters are created, like Han and Leia’s children (those kids become just as universe-changing as their parents/uncle), and even more importantly, significant characters die over the course of those books.

Or they could just ignore them completely.

Yea, he s a much thicker guy…more like Indiana Jones 😃

lol ^^

Anyways yes Harrison Ford has never spoken fondly about Star Wars. I personally could see it being really cheesy if they bring back the old cast but who knows.

Haha I wouldn’t worry too much about that.

Harrison Ford is 70, Mark Hamil is 61 and Carrie Fisher is 56. It’s safe to assume the orginial cast will NOT be a part of Eposide 7. Well I guess it’s possible if Epoisde 7 is set DECADES after the Empire is destroyed and Hamil is used to potray Luke as a Jedi Master like Obi-Wan was in Eposide IV.
