Yes, I know, a third job thread on my part, or fourth maybe. I’m sorry this looks ungrateful. I was very happy getting this job, paying so much more than the previous one and with so overwhelmingly better conditions, at least if you didn’t look deeper into it.

The last thread I made was after a sitaution which led me to thinking about looking for a new job. Now I’m sure I need one. The situation in the law firm is sick. Some senior lawyers take it out on junior ones not out of malice but simply because they can’t cope with the tension and the chaos in the system any more. It’s just not healthy.

Today I decided that being told, “Go and do it since we’re irritated. And we hope this is visible,” (the partner’s own line) is a bit too much, especially followed by being told off for publishing an already approved “final version” which I was told to publish. Apparently, I failed to predict the possibility that the senior lawyer changed her mind, which was very stupid of me not to predict (and probably ask a dozen times before doing anything, if she hadn’t perhaps changed her mind). And in fact, she’s a kind person - just not one who will take the blame if things go wrong, even if she actually creates the mess. That one’s one of the nicest people there - but if the system does that to her, then what about others? I’m wondering if I can take any more of the corporate law firm reality. I’ve had enough of pushy people who try to gain superiority over their equals, bosses who tell you off for doing exactly what they told you (a mate’s just lost his job that way), or who tell you off for what was done a year before you even joined the firm (as in something wrong in a report I was simply supposed to pick up where it ended, with it supposedly having been verified positively by outside auditors of our client and the client itself).

I’ve actually told the senior lawyer I believed that was unjust and it was too much for me to bear. When told off for something I actually missed (a phrase lost in editing, although very important), I told her I wasn’t working at midnight, with lowered perception, of my own choice. I told her I had enough of working till 10 pm, 11 pm, midnight, for the firm and being laughed at or given to understand I’m an idiot or a lazy person. I said it was probably time for me to look for a different job then.

She can’t fire me. She probably wouldn’t think of it. However, the partner can. The partner will likely try telling me off tomorrow for not having met all the time constraints - regardless of the fact that I got a 140-page statement of claim in a foreign language for a foreign arbitral tribunal to read, as well as several years of daily press articles to weed, and some 15 or more cases to report (most from scratch) for the auditors… All that for say, 4 days, maybe five. Having to visit the court on the last two (3 hours, then 2 hours). I think blaming me for not doing all this in such a timespan offends such fundamental notions of justice that I can’t just keep working there like nothing happened. Or not even blaming me, as much as “proving” things to me, like I did 20% of the task that went in my name, regardless of the fact they made me do all the other staff, ignoring my e-mail requesting them to give me someone to help, or move the deadlines, or set up priorities.

I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I will talk back if they criticise me.

Please pray for me. I do need a new job. Or a radical change in this one… or in me. I honestly can’t keep going on like this. 😦

Dear chevalier,

This is uncanny. I too am having major job troubles, especially today, and the first thing that happens after work is I post prayers for two other people going through the same thing. God loves us all and cares about each of our situations.

Praying for you!

From today’s Liturgy of the Hours:

Psalm 42 (43)
Longing for the temple

Vindicate me, Lord:
judge my case against an unholy nation,
rescue me from betrayers, from the wicked.
For you are the God of my refuge;
why have you rejected me?
why must I suffer while my enemies torment me?

Send forth your light and your truth;
let them lead me away,
let them lead me up your holy mountain,
up to your sanctuary.
I shall go in to the altar of God,
to the God of my gladness and joy.
I will sing out to you on the lyre,
O God, my God.

Why are you so sad, my soul,
and anxious within me?
Put your hope in the Lord, I will praise him still,
my saviour and my God.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end.
Amen.

I will ask our Mother and Queen to pray for you and your intentions…

God Bless

For all people suffering in difficult workplace situations…

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.

Amen.

Praying for you, chevalier.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Thank you. I had a lot of peace at work today and although the amount of work is overwhelming, I don’t get disturbed by anyone. I no longer have thoughts of leaving instantly, but I realise I’m not happy with the work and I don’t want to work like that any more. I need to change it. For now, I’ll have at least to keep working until the end of May to claim the salary. Some time late May or early June they’ll probably have a conversation with me about what comes after my trial employment period. I’m going to give honest answers if they ask me how I like it or if I’d like to change anything. And if they give me any lines like, “we’re not entirely satisfied,” or, “we haven’t been able to find out yet,” trying to have me sign another couple of months for the same remuneration (as I suppose will be the case), I’m not going to accept that. I wish I were able to afford quitting… the way things look, I’ll barely have the time to prepare a resume and a covering letter. These days when I’m back from work and done with dinner, it’s well past 11 pm and I get up around 8:30.

Chevalier, I will keep you in my prayers.
I, like you, need a new job. I just recently interviewed for what looks like a dream job, and found out today I did not get it. It wasn’t meant to be, wasn’t in God’s intentions.
My wife gave me some great advice. She told me to pretend that I’m wearing a rubber suit, and let all the nonsense bounce off of it. So when I have those bad days like you, I put on my “rubber suit”, knowing that I’m not going to be there forever.
Don’t lose faith in God, do your job, and keep your eyes and ears open - good things come to those who wait. 👍
Best of luck, and God bless,
Tony

I too work(ed) in a law firm. Today I was fired. Why? Because I’m not a good fit. I have my CLA, my Advanced certification (NALA) and am a Florida registered paralegal with 23 years of experience. I’ve been there since March 31st and the first of April, my husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer so there have been some phone calls and other matters which I have had to tend to. This “professional firm” takes great pleasure in sending filthy emails around (can’t mention how filthy on this forum but believe me I think they sold their souls to the devil)…I don’t know what I’ll do. I’m praying for you. I pray that God will give you peace AND STRENGTH.
God bless.

Thank you.

Diane, I’m very sorry to hear that. It does look like law firms are one of the worst capitalist bloodsuckers. Sometimes I wonder if they take pleasure in being mean. They just seem to want to squeeze as much out of people as possible, be it work for near-free, work way more hours than in the contract, or both. I just want to find one that pays reasonably, doesn’t force overtime - or pays overtime properly, and doesn’t lie to the court and/or customers and/or use other dirty tricks. Is this really too much? I’m wondering about becoming a judge’s clerk, which would be a radical shift… or even leaving the law field.

Tony, sometimes great jobs turn out not to be such great jobs. Sometimes bad things come out only later. Such were things with my current one and things are only getting worse.

Thank everyone for prayers… Today had me experience one more nasty thing. Probably not intentional, but very inconsiderate - it was supposed to be a minor favour, it turned out to be over an hour’s worth of mess to sort out past official work hours. I won’t even get into details. It’s just more proof I need to change the job. I’d start sending out resumes and covering letters soon, but it turns out the guy from whom I was buying some computer parts (my motherboard died in thunderstorm a while ago) was a kid selling out parts in secret from his parents or something like that. So I’m without a computer now too, for a long time until I figure out whether I get my money back and need to obtain another replacement (taking more time) or I get the parts (which he may have sent today) and there’s no taking back the money. Admittedly, I don’t want parts bought in such circumstances, but I didn’t know when I was paying and if I paid a fair price…

At least tomorrow I’ll be seeing in person someone who could get me a job in a police training facility. I’m getting thorougly disenchanted with the law “industry”. State-owned employers at least play by the book.

I feel the same way. I worked so hard for my credentials but am just fed up with these bloodsuckers. I’ve prayed for them but my prayers are answered in ways other than the way I wish. I started thinking about just working at the hospitals (maybe get some sort of nursing training)…I just don’t know what to do. If there are any Christian lawyers out there, I sure can’t find them…even in the church bulletins…I’m so devastated. both financially, mentally and spiritually I am just falling apart. I know exactly how you feel. I’ll keep you in my prayers.

Is there a Christian association around? Or a Catholic-owned small business? They sometimes have a legal department. Or a court? I’m considering a court here, but as a clerk I’d have a hard time also having to pay for my studies. I think I’ll have to stay at work at least until the end of my trial period. If I don’t do anything too stupid, they won’t fire me so soon before it ends. I just need to be done with work by 6 pm so that I can leave and avoid getting someone else’s (higher) work or special assignments from the boss.

Just so you know… I met an acquaintance today, a fellow student in my course. He’s an attorney with 15 years experience. His own firm is starting in a different city, but he knows some people. Mostly in businesses while I specialise in criminal law, but still… Anything’s good where they don’t treat people like dirt.
