what are some of the most important things you look at in accepting a new job? Is it career growth, pay, company culture, etc?

I am currently job seeking, and received 2 job offers but I am not crazy about either. Although one of them I would be learning a design program that is pretty interesting and it’s less than 10 minutes away from my house. The other job pays $1 more and is 23 minutes away, and wouldn’t really be learning anything new, although I did share with them my thoughts on what I would like to grow/advance into, so since they offered me the position I am assuming I could eventually do that. However, I don’t know how long that would be and I am ready to start now in a position where I am learning new skills. the first job I would be learning more new skills but I don’t see much growth there. The people seem great at both places. What would you all do?

My prayer that you will make the right decision for your well-being and future.

Good luck.

Keep in mind that after a couple of years, you might decide to change jobs … depending.

Depending on whether you decide to join the Peace Corps.

Or … depending on the special person you meet and like … decides to relocate.

Or … depending on whether the things they didn’t tell you turn out to be overwhelmingly bad.

Or … depending on whether your new boss insists that staff meetings take place in a local gin mill.

Or … depending on whether your travel reimbursement checks are unacceptably S-L-O-W in coming.

Or … or … or …

If this is your first job, it’s pretty safe to say that you will not stay there forever, or even more than a year or two. In your case, I would go with the job that is going to help me learn the most. You can then take that knowledge with you when the time is right to move along. I wish you success in whatever you choose to do! 🙂

I agree with the above.

Prayers for making a decision between the two that best will meet your needs and hopes.

Mary.

It’s a tough decision. I would probably take the second job because I would want to make more money and have the opportunity for growth on the job.

The first job sounds good because of learning new skills but if the second job offers growth, that will inevitably include learning new skills as well. And $1 more per hour starts things out better in my opinion.

Pray first, ask God to lead you, He will show you the path.

Thank you so much everyone! I am still deciding! I see the same amount of pros and cons for both positions which is making it difficult. But, I will pray on it and thank you all for the prayers! God Bless

So …here is my :twocents:

$1 per hour is approximately $174 per month.

Ask yourself what your time is worth …commuting is time …you will have about 20-30 mine per day or with the farther one about 50-65 mins per day plus the added auto related costs …the closer one may even be walk/bike distance …better for environment and your health.

If it was me …I would probably take the closer one and hope to negotiate a higher pay if not now then soon.

About 50% of men (~30% of women) negotiate starting salaries and for both about 80% successfully do…

I might go back with a counter offer and see if you can get that same starting salary or even half that dollar …if they want you they may up the salary.

Then you would get both …the extra pay and the chance to learn new skills.

Good luck … remember no one is a better advocate for you than you are!

This^^^^. You may actually end up making less money when you add the cost of the commute.

I would go with the job where you can learn more skills. The $1 per hour doesn’t make a huge difference in pay but building your skill set in your field is invaluable.

Hi Yogi89 -

Just curious what you decided - did you negotiate the closer position to a higher starting wage leveraging the higher offer? You can and or could fall back to to that offer depending on how the negotiations went … :compcoff:

Or did you decide that the $1 per hour $174 per month] was worth the job that did not offer new skills? :manvspc:

Just curious how it all worked out …

Blessings … 🙂

I’d go with the job that teaches skills. And the one where the people are nicer and easier to get along with.

Yogi has another thread that says he/she took neither job, and has a week off before starting a different job. 👍

Thanks … good to know that they have found a job! 🙂 - Nice to have three options!
Hi Yada,
Thank you for asking how everything went! I only had those 2 options at first, but since I wasn’t crazy about either I took a risk and turned them both down especially since I was still getting some calls for other interviews. Fortunately, I got offered a position that paid exactly what I was looking for. I don’t start until July 10th, so i’m looking for things to do in the meantime! Thanks again, God Bless you!

Congratulations on the new position - and I pray that you have many successes in this endeavor 👍

An individual mix of all that and some more. You’ll need to figure out the details of the mix on your own, but it’s a mix.

What is the relative prestige of the two companies? How would having worked for them influence your future employability? How junior or senior is the position each of them offers you?
so since they offered me the position I am assuming I could eventually do that.
Don’t. Even explicit promises are only fully credible if they’re on paper (if at all).
However, I don’t know how long that would be and I am ready to start now in a position where I am learning new skills. the first job I would be learning more new skills but I don’t see much growth there. The people seem great at both places. What would you all do?
The monetary difference doesn’t seem sufficient to justify spending time in a job that doesn’t teach you new skills or otherwise help your future career. You’re young, so long-term development has to take priority.

Still consider the prestige of the name etc., but also consider that résumé will need to reflect your responsibilities and achievements, not just the name of your employer or of your position within the hierarchy.

Oh, congrats. Not deleting the advice since I guess it could still help you or someone else.

Thank you!! That was great advice, and is actually a lot of what you said is what helped me determine the best thing to do.
