Hello,

I would like to know if working for an association that does many good things is wrong if this same association, as an annex activity, also gives money for immoral things. I think more precisely about a students association which sometimes gives money for popular parties where everyone gets drunk. It is not its main purpose or activity. It’s just something this association does sometimes.

Thanks in advance for your answers,

Hello.

Are these intrinsically immoral things the association is supporting? Seems to me a party is okay, but funding things like abortion is a different story.

No it’s not abortion or things like that. It’s an association whose role is to represent the interests of the students in the university. But sometimes they help funding parties for the students as well. And everyone knows that most of those who go at those parties have the purpose of getting drunk. They’re like nightclub parties. However as I said, it’s not the purpose of the association to do that. It’s only an extra activity they do sometimes. So I would think it’s a case where the principle of the double effet applies and therefore it’s not immoral to work for this association. What would you think? It seems it’s like working for the State adminstration. Even if the State funds immoral things sometimes (as alomst every state do), it’s not immoral to work for the State, as long as you do not directly participate in those fundings.

Alcohol is not intrinsically immoral. A student organization funding a party where alcohol is consumed legally is not doing anything unethical at all. If underage drinking or public intoxication is being tolerated or promoted, that would be different.
