Perhaps you remember my previous work situation. Working full time first for free, then for below minimal wage, some ethical problems, largely illegal contract.

And you perhaps remember how great it was to get work in a big law firm which seemed to respect me a bit and pay me well.

I was aware that 9-10 hour days would be norm, well, not as in every day, but as in no big deal. However, my current week looks more like 11-12 hours every day, sometimes above 12.

This week, today, on Friday, the boss gave me work (opinion on a fresh administrative order to discontinue an advertisement we had opined on, something to write for the client as well) late in the afternoon. He kept increasing the assignment up until even 8 pm. I was only able to leave at 9. And he actually dug up something he had asked me to do (verifying every footnote in a long court paper from the opposing counsel) and it seems he wanted it in writing. Doesn’t matter I talked about it to the senior lawyer who was working on it on every day basis and she was fine with that. He actually told me to come on Saturday morning. Told him I had university - I have my Ph.D. course and I was determined to tell him to shoot himself in the foot rather than skip my class for him. In fact, I thought I would cancel the employee contract if he asked for that.

That’s not the worst thing. The worst thing is he’s making me feel like I’m lagging behind, not doing what I’m asked to, not really understanding the tasks. I feel like I’m a big kid in a constant exam by many teachers of whom every single one thinks his subject is the most important of all. Because there are other people too. Each love to delegate duties and at least one has no qualms pushing the blame down the social ladder. I remember getting blamed - I mean psychologically, not officially, since they couldn’t - I just received several e-mails on how to monitor cases in courts after they ignored my photos and information about the dismissal of one motion. The appeal time was finishing when they first told me to start monitoring those cases - all 10 of them, and they were somewhat surprised I didn’t from some source actually know them all by heart (talking about several years old proceedings dragging through many instances) - this when I had only been working there for two weeks.

Now it’s 1.5 months and I’m burnt out. I can’t continue working 10–11 hours daily and now they’re starting with Saturdays and more and more sudden work, more and more unprecise tasks and surprise blame.

To make things worse, few people around me, other than the administrative staff genuinely respect other people. Some of my peers aren’t bad about that, but I’ve had to take the consequences of their laziness. One nominally senior lawyer is good, but has her own moments and isn’t 100% reliable as an ally. The rest… some just don’t care. Some are nice, but are not respectful. Some treat people like supplicants or like downright servants or just dirt.

The style of work is such that delaying proceedings is a normal thing to do. Sometimes I wonder if people don’t forget to sign papers before sending intentionally to buy some time. Some cases are big screaming ethical headaches. For example supporting dying patients who are denied financing of their treatment… would be great to do, except the paying client is the company which produces the treatment. Contract says they just pay, regardless of the result, and have no other contact with the case (can’t look at files, give directions, nothing). But still… who’s reaping the benefits coming from all the writing about how illegal it is to withdraw financing from cancer patients? For whose benefit it really is? It’s not clearly unethical to do (and it might be unethical to refuse to do it), but it’s taxing. The attitude of some of the bosses isn’t helping.

All in all, I just can’t bear it physically. It’s destroying me and I mean in the physical sense. But I don’t have any other work prospect and I’ve already e-mailed all major law firms looking remotely compatible (as in not the ones that are e.g. not entitled to do what I specialise in) and there’s no reply. The university won’t hire me. I need to pay bills, pay for the Ph.D. course, the family’s financial situation is worsening and I should help out. I can’t afford losing the job and plainly - I don’t want to be jobless. It already took a whole month between the jobs in February.

But at the same time I just come home to sleep and can’t have enough of even that, if I want to read or play any… No time for anything. No time to catch up on sleep or regenerate strength. Nothing. And that in a place which lives from the law. Eh. Sorry for the long rant. Please keep me in your prayers if you don’t have people with more serious problems to pray for. I’ll be drafting another resume and looking around for a more human work.

It doesn’t sound like you even have the time to get a resume together…God Bless you, Chevalier…I’ll be praying for you. Hang in there!

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

chevalier,

It sounds like you’re living the life of a litigator. This is the norm with big firms. I have a nephew that has been working the kind of hours you are talking about for probably 10 years. I don’t know how he does it. When you are in that position you are living to work, and not working to live.

You are in my prayers.

In fact, I don’t even do litigation. I mean, I work in litigation, but here you need 3-3.5 years of additional training after your Master’s in law in order to receive the right to practice on your own. So I can write, but I can’t sign. I can prepare advice but while I could give it, it’s not customary to, so the senior ones do it (in other departments than litigation, younger lawyers deal with clients too, but litigation is specific). Staying overtime when you prepare your own project, even if someone else gets to sign it, is one thing. Doing research and being told to come on Saturday so you could find and verify jurisprudence in languages you don’t know, that’s a different story. I hate how they guilt-trip people into thinking they’re lagging behind while stay over 10 hours in the firm. I wonder if they take pleasure in breaking people and subjecting them - I don’t accuse them of consciously doing that, but I sometimes wonder if they don’t have a subconscious streak.

This thing was such a cold shower. I know I should have treated that work more seriously, but I had much more and more important stuff and I dealt with it anyway, and now “you’ll have to come tomorrow” after overloading me with new stuff on Friday evening…

… Yesterday I prayed for some guidance. Things weren’t good at work and I had been praying for a while in that regard. Perhaps this was a sobering impulse. I thought it was a great gift from above that I got this work with my own laptop, name on the door, some other perks. Money to pay for the studies and ease the load on the family, and finally some appreciation. Now turns out I don’t have time for anything, the work is so highly ethically doubtful and the bosses are unbearable. I feel it drags me away from God. As it also drags me away from family. Or friends. And forget finding a girl to marry. If sometimes I can’t even get enough sleep (I have to wake up in 5.5 hours, by the way, looking at another late-nighter with work stuff). I think I need a different job and this thing from today may have been a sign. Perhaps I need to give up delusions about this work. I’ve been at least partly at fault showing off when still late at the office, taking up much work, waiting to bill a round 10-hour, such stuff.

I think I’ll be slowly trimming it down to what I actually have in my contract or just a bit more. They won’t appreciate me for anything more, while they will gladly make use of it. And I need to start sending out resumes again. Time for a different job. Just can’t remain without one. But I feel so bad having to swallow things like their telling me to come on Saturday and do stupid footnote checking on opposing counsel’s writing.

Will be keeping you and your place of employment and your employers in prayer…

Lord, I ask that You bring relief and Mercy to this person in their job situation. Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.

Watch, O Lord (St. Augustine)

Watch, O Lord, with those who wake, or watch, or weep tonight, and give Your angels and saints charge over those who sleep.
Tend Your sick ones, O Lord Christ.
Rest Your weary ones.
Bless Your dying ones.
Soothe Your suffering ones.
Pity Your afflicted ones.
Shield Your joyous ones, and all for Your love’s sake. Amen.

Praying for you. I worked for a small CPA firm when I got out of college. 72 hour work weeks were the norm from December through April 15th. I was in my 20s and felt like I was 80. As soon as I passed the CPA exam, I split and went into the corporate world where I had a great career and a normal life. Persevere! Hopefully there will be better days ahead for you!
