Hey everyone
I am looking for a job right now to earn some money before I go off to college next year. Basicly some type of retail most likely. The problem I am running into is that most of the retail that is hiring is between 15 and 20 miles from my house. Would it be worth it to drive that far for that type of job? I hope I am making sence.

Depends on how much you will end up spending on gas etc and how many hours and at what pay. 🤷**

Are there other jobs closer to home (maybe fast food etc)?

I travel 15 miles one way to work…it’s really not that far. I listen to Catholic radio, or pray the Rosary which make the trip really meaningful. But, 15 miles really isn’t that far. I would say 30 miles one way would be starting to push it, for me, personally. Good luck in finding a job, God bless!

that is a good point. i mean, if you are making $8 an hour, working 20 hours per week…it might not be worth it.🤷

Let’s say your car gets 15 miles to the gallon, and gas is 1.75 per gallon (above the national average).

You work 20 miles from home.

Your 20 hours is 5 hours per day. It will cost you $18.67 per week in gas. Your gross pay will be $160.

Do the math on the job and see if it is worth it for you.

Math people rock. 👍

Using kage_ar’s numbers - assume your tank is 20 gallons - @ 1.75 per gallon = $35 to fill up. At 15 mpg, you’d get 300 miles out of a tank. 20 miles one way means 40 round trip times 5 days is 200 miles per week. So, you’d burn 67% of your tank = between $23 and $24 in gas expense. At $8 an hour, 20 hours a week (part time), gross is $160. After taxes, I’d assume you’d bring home $125 maybe? So after gas, which is only one expense we’re taking into account, you’d clear $100 a week.

Sound about right?
