If someone is on a search for a new job, while employed at their current one, would it be a sin to ask for time off to go to an interview under the guise of a different reason? (ie have to help wife, take kids somewhere, etc?).

Asking for time off is not wrong. However lying on the reason is wrong. Do you need to give a reason? Usually business are not allowed to ask what the personal reason is. If they ask they easily expose themselves to a lawsuit. Just tell them that it is a personal matter that you are uncomfortable to discuss. Those are the key words to protect you from further inquiry.

You owe no explanation to your employer as to why you want to take vacation time-- I am assuming that you have accrued time off that is yours to take.

I agree that you should frame it as a personal matter that requires your attention.

Guess I should have asked your opinions first. When I asked, I ended up blurting out a different reason (offered it not asked) without thinking.

In this competitive age I would say ‘no’. You may not get the job. To compromise your existing job may send a powerful signal the employer you are no longer committed to them.

I have done so. I have no feelings of guilt for so doing 👍

well just to be on the safe side, I went to confession last Sat. I think God was testing me–I got to church & the early mass was still in (Sat vigil). All of a sudden, the lights went out in the parking lot & the church. They finished the mass & Msgr did confessions using a flash light. LOL! All’s well that ends well–thank you all for your (name removed by moderator)ut & may God Bless you.👍

If you use time that the company allows you over the course of the year (ie. Sick leave, Personal Paid Time, Vacation), then it is your time to do with as you please-especially vacation. In the case of ppt, tell them it is for an appointment that you were unable to schedule outside of working hours. You might consider making up the hours, but it’s really none of their business what you actually use it for (unless you say your sick-they may expect a doctors excuse).

My bride tells of a cow-orker once took a day off to go hunting (Because “job hunting” is always in season)

ROFL Just dont tell them where you are hunting or what’s in season!👍

Make a doctors or denist appointment for the same day. And tell them about that appointment.

That it still a sinful approach because the intent is to deceive the person. Saying only part of the truth to deceive someone is sinful.

Simply say, I need some personal time away for the office. Or I have some personal tasks or you have to run some errands, or you have some things that needs some attention away from the office.

Telling your current employer you are going to a job interview can have serious negative consequences. In some places it could even get you fired.

If you really do not want your boss to know just say you can not disclose the reason. That it is “private”. He does not have a right to know that you are job hunting.
