Jobs for a philosophy student

So I need some job ideas for my husband who is finishing up his Philosophy Ph.D. He probably won’t have his dissertation done for a few years, so I was wondering what kind of jobs he could get in the meantime with just his masters (he doesn’t have much experience beside some temp jobs)? I work right now, but we really want him to get a job so I can stay home with our kiddos. Any suggestions from any Philosophers on what you did in the meantime before you found a good teaching position? Or what other kinds of jobs can Philosophers get besides teaching (for when he finishes his dissertation)? Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

Writing or teaching. – Both pay well

Yeah, you can teach with a master’s.

Writing is hard to live off of, but it can work.

I have a degree in English and I work customer service.

If it was me, I’d stay with the teaching, college level. Then, in a few years, perhaps university level. By then, he should have considered what is needed, in the philosophy world, and should be prepared to write on it.

In the mean time, teaching at the high school level. Sales . . . well, he is into philosophy, isn’t he? Selling TV’s, appliances, furniture, and cars, as a last resort. It’s a tough job market right now, with this economy. But, in about 2 -3 years, times should start to get better and things should start booming. Check with newer Catholic Churches, they always need someone for their various ministries. Depending on what you need to bring home, he may have to work two jobs. It’s not that bad.

If your husband has a Master’s in philosophy and is already enrolled in a PhD program, so long as he is part time as a student, he can get a job teaching philosophy full time in a Community College. He might look for one in the area you live in, or look for a community college in a distant area you like. If he gets the job, he can always enroll in different university for his advanced degree. I’ve known several community college professors who taught philosophy with an MA and retired never having pursued their PhD. The thing to remember is that with an MA only it is unlikely he will get a job teaching philosophy in a four year college or university except for part time work. Catholic colleges are more likely to be interested in him than public colleges, as the secular establishment in academia today is fairly biased against Catholics.

I agree about teaching at community college. The philosophy professor at my community college only has an MA, and he’s not even planning on going for the PhD! Also, he may be able to get a job as an assistant at a university.
