What kind of jobs can one do in the church? Does anyone know?

I’ve been thinking that I would like to be involved in the church, but I need something that would support me. I kinda want to go to school again, for a theology degree or something similar, but I may be getting married in a year, and I don’t have a lot of money. I certainly want to be involved in RICA, but I don’t think it’s a paid position, which is fine of course, but I would still need an actual job.

Any ideas?

Thanks!!

It depends on what you want to do and the kind of lifestyle you want to live as the Church does not pay much. Probably the most popular paid position in a parish is the Director of Faith Formation or Religious Education. In most parishes this is a full time job. You can also get a job as a youth minister, parish social minister or Pastoral Associate. RCIA director is usually a volunteer position unless you are also the DRE or PA. If you have an MA degree you may be able to get a position on a Diocesan level but usually you need experience on a parish level first. You can also get a teaching position in a high school with an MA or on a college level. There the pay may be a bit higher if you are full time.

I see. I guess I have to keep researching, because I’ve been praying and praying to try to figure out what G-d wants me to do and I still don’t know.

Nonetheless, thanks for your help =)

any job in the “outside world” can be done in the Church–ordinary business and administative jobs like accountant, HRD, IT, and so forth. Dioceses and institutions have staffs. The jobs where a theology degree are required are more limited for a lay person. DRE would be one, so could canon law be, with of course more legal education. Obviously teacher in a Catholic school or college, or medical professional in a Catholic hospital (which are getting rarer). May I suggest since marriage and family is your vocation that you concentrate on preparing for that, and don’t undertake advanced education until you know what you will be using it for. I have seen many people take the time and expense to get an advanced degree w/o a clear idea what job they have in mind, and what are the prerequisites.

Like all non-profits, work with the Church pays less than the same job in the for-profit world.

There are plenty of places to volunteer, including RCIA and CCD, which need lay people, and for which the diocese or parish offers training and formation at low cost, that you can do while remaining in your current job and raising a family
