Let’s see…

Here in Maryland
  • Jobs with the County/City government (libraries, etc.)
  • Jobs with the State or Federal government (A little better than the county, but still around $18,000-$30,000)
  • Game testing up in Hunt Valley, although it’s more seasonal. We’re not LA or Seattle.
  • Probably other jobs up in Hunt Valley.
  • Webpage development/IT (Just take along a CD of works you’ve made, and that’ll help)
Don’t know of any specifics, though.
Most pay between $8-$15 an hour. (Local library pays minimum wage regardless - might be ok for a summer job)

This is an interesting thread, and I hope it continues to get replies. I am a freshman at a prestigous university and I have been strongly considering taking some time off to look into my other options. Neither of my parents attended college, but my Father, bless him, works very hard and built a strong business. I truly believe that if an individual is inteligent and motivated, with God on their side, they can be succesful. I also think that the college atmosphere can be harmful to many, which I have experienced personally.

This article is very interesting and is worthy of some consideration. It ives several reason why to skip college and talks about some careers where experience is mre important than education.

Hold on. If you can afford to get an education at a college then do it. It is not so much the degree that matters but that fact that you could start and finish a project. It means alot to employee to see that you have dedication to stay somewhere and finish a degree. I work for a small business and i started here in accounting though my degree was in History/English. They knew that I had the mental ability to learn something and that if they gave me a project that i could do it on my own without tons of hands on supervision.Your degree is sometimes the way to get your foot in the door to a company. Believe me i was looking for a new job 2 months ago and everyone wants you to have the degree even if it not in the field you are applying for. Yes experience matters but when pared with a degree it is better.

If you do not like what you are studying then switch majors. Do what you want not what others are telling you to study. My first two years of college i took the basics from all different departments until i found the one that i had the most interest in. I found history and ran with it even though everyone said “what are you going to do with a History Degree…Teach?” Nope i did accounting and office managing and now i am a contracts administrator .

The thread on US incomes made me wonder . . .

What kinds of jobs are available to someone w/ only a high school diploma? Are they jobs that can support a family? (i.e. hubby works and wife stays home w/ kids) Is there such a thing anymore? —KCT
Sanitation worker
Construction worker
Some trades (with trade school training)
UPS delivery

Some of these jobs are perfect for ADHD types. Lots of activity.

Sanitation workers have it tough but they perform a critical service and they should be proud of it. Benefits are usually good, too.

My cousin and his wife both work as mail carriers for the US Postal Service. Neither have education beyond high school diplomas. They’ve done pretty well for themselves: a nice house in an area with good schools for the kids and a vacation home in northern Michigan. They seem pretty happy with their jobs, too.

And I bet their retirement package is pretty good too.

That explains **all **the problems with the Postal System:D

There is a big demand for welders. Pays upwards of $20 per hour.

A young woman of today who doesn’t get at least an associates degree, or specilized job training is missing out. With a high school diploma a man can expect working in extreme conditions, mostly outdoors or under something, a house, a building. It’s hard, back breaking work. A woman with a high school diploma, waitressing, babysitting, or working at WallyWorld. No retirement, no 401K, and sadly, no insurance. Both should marry after they receive their post-secondary education. Then mom can stay at home…knowing if something goes awry, she has something to fall back on other than 5 uses for a swiffer sweeper.
