Hello I am looking for a job and I thought about applying at wal-mart cos its close to my house.But I have heard that we shouldnt support wal-mart…is it ok to work there?
 
I say go work there. I have a couple of friends from church that work at our WalMart. The world is no better or worse because of who is putting the products on the shelves. In fact, I would wear a little crucifix pin or something like that.
 
I can’t say that there is anything morally wrong with working at WalMart, but after having worked there for nearly four years while I was in college, I can’t say that I would recommend it. :nope: I’m sure like any job that a lot of what you deal with on a daily basis will depend on the management working in your store, but it was by far the most unfair place I have ever worked.
 
Before you apply at Walmart I HIGHLY recommend you rent and watch the documentary entitled:

Walmart: the High Cost of Low Prices.

The way they treat their employees is not something I think anyone would actually volunteer for, or knowingly seek out employment in. I am not just talking about over-seas factory workers, I am talking domestically.

That documentary was such an eye-opener for me that I have not stepped foot inside a Walmart since seeing it. Much less would I seek employment or recommend employment to anyone.

How about Target? Have you a Target in your area? I have a couple of friends who currently work for Target and they have little to no complaints.

I’d like to see that film, KC…I wonder where I can get it. I doubt Walmart carries it. 😃 But, maybe Blockbuster, you think? :hmmm:
 
I think, as a pp stated, it depends on the management (doesn’t that seem to be the truth with all jobs). I have a few relatives that have been working for Walmart for 10+ years and have nver sought another job. They enjoy their work at Walmart and the opportunities it provides for them. I have worked in different positions for different companies, and in reality, it all comes down to management. I bet you could find many teachers or employees of parishes who can tell you the “poor” management by some priests, religious, and/or principals. There is a serious management problem in this country, imho, and Walmart does not lay sole claim in this.
 
Don’t believe everything the Wal-Mart bashers publish. I’ve shopped at the same Wal-Mart for about 15 years and see many of the same faces week after week. I also see the manager out on the floor working and walking through checking on his people. The store employs a number of handicapped people and a lot of elderly ones. I’ve chatted with many of the employees and, other than a couple of chronic malcontents, haven’t heard any of the gripes you would expect if the company was that bad. Maybe it does come down to the attitude and capability of the local manager. There’s more turnover in managers at this particular store than in hourly employees.
 
I worked at Sam’s Club while in college for a year and they treated us very well. In fact the starting pay was one of the highest in the area.
 
I’ve known several people who worked there; some have had good experiences, some bad. Of course, the working conditions are going to vary based on your coworkers and boss. Our local store has many long term employees and since there are a number of job options, I’m guessing our local store must not be a bad place to work.
 
As someone who lives in WalMart’s home state, I know many people who work for WalMart.

Like any company, there are going to be good and bad things, some employees are going to be unhappy.

I’ll tell you one story, I know this girl personally. She is from a less than storybook home situation, mom gone, raised by a single dad who is disabled and unable to hold a job. They depend on aid to live.

In high school, she gets a part time job at the local Wally world. She is a good worker, graduates and goes full time. She continues to work hard. Three years later, she is an assistant buyer at Corporate.

I have never met anyone who was mistreated by WalMart as an employee.

I saw this movie, DH and I got it through Blockbuster’s website.

Great flick, I recommend it.

My son’s Godfather works for Walmart and has for…10 years maybe. He loves it there. They treat him well and are very accommodating with his schedule with a working wife and 2 small children. His parents have had some health issues recently, and Walmart has been very accommadating with adjusting his work hours so he can assist with care, hospital visits, etc. He had accumulated quite a bit of untaken sick leave over the years, and they actually cut him a check for his untaken time, so he still had income while he was taking time to spend with his parents.
