Jodie Foster Says Studios Are ‘Ruining’ Movies With Big-Budget Superhero Blockbusters

They make money on them.
Young people, if they are not old enough to drink, or don’t have hobbies, have little to do on the weekends except go to the movies, and they flock to these.
Young men feel like they can’t afford to date, young women don’t like to go out alone, or are afraid to hang out in bars, and so the uncoupled flock to these things. And yeah, they are not terribly fine or entertaining for adults.
Just my opinion.
I don’t ever go to these type of movies. I much prefer a great classic story well acted and well told.
YMMV

They have to keep up and do something that is similar if not bigger than computer games. So they do video games on huge screens with 3D or 4D effects. What else can they do Jodie?

Like most other things movies studios are about making money. The artistic value and such is near meaningless if it doesn’t make money.

The concept also applies to pop music and many other things.

She’s right. Most of these big budget special-effects movies stink. They are soulless and unsatisfying.

Then why are all the non big-blockbister movies also terrible? I can count the ‘good’ movies of the last 4-5 years on one hand.

Actually, I would say the big superhero blockbusters are better than 99% of the lesser known stuff. At least those generally show a minimum level of competency in storytelling and characterization.

Hello.

I think people are looking for something in the movies, not only escape. And if they are looking for escape, what’s the escape from?

And if so many people are going to see superheroes, I wonder what (or who) it is that they’re looking for.

Just my two cents.

I say they cast her as the villain in the next superhero movie.
It doesn’t matter which one
Just a superhero movie

They are soulless…
An interesting description, similar to a critique I saw on the latest Star Wars movie. The critic said Hollywood movie writers and directors no longer understand morality, so they simply can’t create a convincing story about the battle between good and evil. They follow their formulas. They recycle bits that they think portray good and evil. But there is no overall moral framework so the result doesn’t make sense.

She isn’t wrong. Sometimes Hollywood gives us something genuinely creative and meaningful. But there’s been a glut of movies that depend on the name of some other franchise. Brand recognition gets dollars. I guess I can’t blame studios for doing what brings in the money, but it does hurt the art of the cinema. Especially when the public becomes accustomed to it and stops tolerating creativity. It’s like getting a diet of sweets salt and fat. Suddenly that broccoli makes you gag.

Serous actors look down on anything not-classic and not-grim. They go into acting because they want to play King Lear and Blanche DuBois
There’s nothing wrong with that. There is nothing wrong with theater that makes you think
But guess what? I don’t always wanna think. When I do have the chance to sit down and enjoy a movie or have some down time, I really don’t want to be “treated” to a Very Special Episode.
I want some escapism and fun. I want to leave the movie theater laughing at the jokes or marveling over the cool special effects or humming the songs and feeling fine.
I work with sick people all day. Don’t wanna be “entertained” by some movie about somebody battling cancer.
Or maybe I’m just a Philistine.

Right. And the characters are never someone that I can care about. If I leave the theater wondering what the main characters are going to do after the movie has ended, it was a good movie. But most movie characters are not worth caring about. In fact, many times I just wish all the characters would die and get it over with.

Yep, and special effects can never replace a good screenplay and well-rounded characters you can care about.

I like her comparison to “fracking.” The new method of condensing natural gas and shipping it overseas is another American development. How in the world do we let those other countries compete anyway. I think we should use the open-ness of the internet to take suggestions. Ms. Foster should know it’s a tall mountain to climb, it’s either Mountain View movies with Steve Jobs or Disney’s TV “Parent Trap” which no children dare attempt or their purchases of Marvel and Star Wars. Time to listen to Madness by Muse, good song.

She has a valid point.

What a whiner!

She doesn’t like these action films – fine.

She complains that there is “a ‘lack of respect’ for directors in Hollywood” – poor baby, more people are watching blockbuster superhero movies than the one episode she directed for a series on Netflix. The nerve!

No one will hire her to direct a superhero film – she’d try to turn it into some sort of psychological thriller that will make you need therapy after viewing it.

“Studios making bad content to appeal to the masses…”

Yeah, because “the masses” of people, of course, have no ability to know what they like. We’re just too stupid to realize the entertainment we enjoy is nothing but bad content.

Some people love art films. Some people love superhero movies.

I don’t see why this is a problem.

And Jodie Foster complaining publicly about this just sounds like sour grapes – that other people are getting the blockbuster directing jobs, the public praise and attention she wants for herself.

To be honest, superhero movies don’t bother me as much as cringe-worthy raunchy movies. I enjoy watching superhero stuff as simply entertainment. There are some good movies (the new Thor, wonderwoman) and there are some bad. Not everyone wants to watch deep soulful movies all of the time. I don’t even tend to go for such movies. I’d rather read a book or watch a TV series where it’s broken down into episodes/easier to focus.

She does sound a little whiny, not going to lie.

I don’t understand the big deal about the Superhero movies. I have seen a few, but I think there are way too many. They overdid it if you ask me. The same with Star Wars.
I saw the first one and haven’t seen any others.

Black mirror is the best show on TV (Netflix) and Jodie directed the great episode “arkangel.”
