But the party platform is pro-abortion. Yes, there are pro-life Democrats, but there are few of them, & they may be coming under pressure to conform…

Edit: We can also hope part of the reason is that people go up to just receive a blessing and not disrupt the flow of traffic.
I don’t understand why one would be in the line for communion if they can’t receive Our Lord. Besides, isn’t there the final blessing before the dismissal?

In the Divine Liturgy, the priest blesses everyone with the Holy Gifts i.e. the Blessed Sacrament. So there’s a built-in Benediction at every Divine Liturgy.

This is the Douay-Rheims version w/ footnotes:

[23] For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread. [24] And giving thanks, broke, and said: Take ye, and eat: this is my body, which shall be delivered for you: this do for the commemoration of me. [25] In like manner also the chalice, after he had supped, saying: This chalice is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as often as you shall drink, for the commemoration of me. [26] For as often as you shall eat this bread, and drink the chalice, you shall shew the death of the Lord, until he come. [27] Therefore whosoever shall eat this bread, or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and of the blood of the Lord. [28] But let a man prove himself: and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of the chalice. [29] For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh judgment to himself, not discerning the body of the Lord. [30] Therefore are there many infirm and weak among you, and many sleep.

[27] “Or drink”: Here erroneous translators corrupted the text, by putting “and drink” (contrary to the original) instead of “or drink”.

[27] “Guilty of the body”: not discerning the body. This demonstrates the real presence of the body and blood of Christ, even to the unworthy communicant; who otherwise could not be guilty of the body and blood of Christ, or justly condemned for not discerning the Lord’s body.

[28] “Drink of the chalice”: This is not said by way of command, but by way of allowance, viz., where and when it is agreeable to the practice and discipline of the church.

[31] But if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. [32] But whilst we are judged, we are chastised by the Lord, that we be not condemned with this world.

In reality, the whole Catholic position regarding abortion has in recent years become confusing and unclear. This stems from those at the top in my opinion, as these two links from National Catholic Register illustrate.

That was a bold move.

I’m sure the priest will find himself in the midst of a guano-storm , but good on him.

His name is Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. Not simply “Ratzinger”.

Please show him the respect due.
I believe he wrote it before being named pope … therefore he was +Ratzinger at the time. Calling him that is perfectly appropriate

Jesus healed sinners. Like a physician. That is not what you are describing. Do you think your idea is one of ego? Humility?
Even Jesus own Apostles questioned and were uncomfortable with his choices of association. Matthew. The woman by the well. The centurian from which " Lord I am not worthy" derives. Thing was, that Centurian knew he was not worthy. Did the uncomfortable followers realize their own rank unworthiness in that passage?
Jesus was ever the physician. Administering the medicine needed.
And here is the point.
What was the medicine Matthew needed? His sickness was that God could not love such as him. To vile, shameful, ugly, unworthy. Jesus sharing fellowship was simple. God loves you the same as that righteous looking guy who men admire. You are also special in God’s eyes. THE miracle becomes accepting this for everyone.
In the parable (Prodigal son) the minor theme is the symbolism of the fatted calf for the unworthy son. The overriding message however is revealed via the son who proports no issues of worthiness at all.
His resentment is a symptom. The illness was his inability to reconcile the fathers metering of equality in love. He felt more worthy his brother less worthy, and that sickness poisoned him. His father showed him love by giving him the medicine he needed. A lesson on worthiness to be loved by God.
Jesus is constantly ministering to sinners. And it turns out sinners include the most obedient, pius, and righteous. Not just the obvious like Matthew.
" And he said to them," You justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts; for what is human esteemis an abomination in the sight of God. (Luke 16:15). WHY is it an abomination? Ultimately because it harm’s these children also.
The disgruntled men in the parable about the workers and wages once again directed at the full day worker. A message that answers the expectation of DESERVED recognition.
Answer: All you need to know is it’s my coin, I will distribute as I see fit. That’s part of the bargain. Be happy in your wage it isn’t your business how I distribute it.
Jesus was gentle with the ego of sinners. Their medicine was not an accounting and punishment. It was" I love you despite your ugliness."
Jesus harsh words and anger was again, the medicine needed.
The Pharisees, the priests, and those whose egos who needed to be tamped down and reminded they are not more worthy.
It is a faith of humility for all which humility let’s the Holy Spirit in.
The thought should always be, we are not saved because we are good. We are saved because God is good.
So I tend to get sensitive to viewing of worthy and unworthy. Who is in a state of Grace and who isn’t. The " priest" is as succeptible as the tax collector. Peter , THE ROCK himself was vulnerable.
We are rank unworthy! And God loves us all, anyway! It is the hardest message in the Gospel to accept. For everyone. The righteous lash out at the unworthy to nourish their insecurity.

I do not know why this priest decided he knew enough to know the man, or what he considers mortal sin, but I would like to note a couple of points. The man has a 34% approval rating from NARAL, the lowest of any Democrat I have seen, though I know some must be lower. His last public action on abortion I can remember was supporting the Hyde Amendment, for which NARAL condemned him. He is not exactly the pro-abortionist he is being made our to be.

what he considers mortal sin
Again, in everything that has been cited for why the priest can do this, mortal sin has nothing to do with it. The priest is not denying holy communion to Biden because he thinks he’s in mortal sin. He denied communion to him due to his public cooperation with passing and promoting something which is considered intrinsically evil in opposition to Catholic teaching.

I hear you. However, contraceptors are not normally manifest public sinners.
But making an issue of “public sin” may appease my sensitivities, it may give the appearance that sinning in private, because I don’t know about it, isn’t a problem.

Almost like the axiomatic, “If a tree fell in the woods and nobody was there to hear it, did it really make noise?”

The problem with the Biden scenario is that if the priest denied Biden the Sacrament, there should have been no public discussion by the priest, the bishop, the media (including the Catholic press, or even us).

I would have felt better reading reports that Biden was counselled or given fraternal correction privately by the priest and bishop…and hopefully that happened…if it didn’t, that would be, perhaps a bigger scandal.

Its a tough call, but like so many things in this changing world and nation, even the theological and spiritual seems to have been replaced by political motivation.

Do you? Denial of the real presence to accomplish a wake up call? Ok, the wake up call is in. What has been learned?
I wonder, is the priests actions restorative in design, or, a warning to the rest of us. That is the thought that pairs with punishment and wake up call.

I think people mouth the words of the Centurian every week and remain unhealed. And your test of Grace vel non, simply alters the impediment to healing.

Learned? That’s up to Joe Biden to take to heart. Ideally that he should examine his public actions in the light of his private faith.

Ah, “restorative”. Yes, Jesus is the Divine Physician. But healing can hurt. Healing involves exposing ones wounds. After treatment, it may involve therapy that involves working muscles and limbs to their proper form, which isn’t fun, especially if those limbs haven’t been properly or even at all. For cases of chronic malnutrition, patients need to be given a careful diet since they could die from the shock of the food they eat. They had to do so with concentration camp prisoners.

Jesus came to heal us, when did He ever say it’d be painless and “nice”?

The Eucharist is medicinal, but it is not medicine, and it is not a right. It is the Body and Blood of Christ, and anyone who eats and drinks Him unworthily eats and drinks damnation unto themselves. Is it restorative to simply assume everything is fine, that communicants can just very publicly do things in grave violation of Church teaching and still have a-okay spiritual lives? Could they not perhaps be so sick that they can’t even see it?

So far, allowing pro-abortion politicians to receive the Eucharist has done nothing to help change their hearts- and I wonder why? Perhaps it is because receiving our Eucharistic Lord in a state of mortal sin is a sin in itself, and the more we sin, the further we distance ourselves from Him.
