Your points too have some validity. I think the Osteens have something to say. I think that morality is complex and that the best approach might lie somewhere between the prosperity gospel and the sour faced saints - which is, FYI, a very Thomistic/Aristotelian way of seeing things. Now, the beauty of that allowance is that some people will respond better to going one way or the other, provided no approach is too extreme. I disagree with a Prosperity gospel; I just don’t think the Osteens are really advocates of that. Could I be wrong? Sure. Do I think they have something to say worth listening to? Absolutely.

Thanks Polar, I do appreciate your points and actual discussion with you. I think too often there are extreme reactions by Catholics to well known Protestant ministers. The reaction is to call them all charlatans which isn’t true and write them off. Any time I’ve tried to talk about WoF type teachers, I’ve always tried to focus on what they teach, not ther personalities, looks, accents, lifestyle, etc. Those things are distractions. Instead we should focus on what they teach and the differences with what our Church teaches.

I am from Houston and I pass Joel Osteens super church on the way to work. I watched one of his preachings on the television a few nights ago. I would not call him a heretic, of course what he preaches is a far step away from Catholicism but he seems to be only promoting messages of hope and faith in God. I agree with the OP in that fact that it is okay to listen to such protestant preaching, as long as we tune out what is* truly* not in line with Catholicism.

I find that I benefit a lot from listening to his talks. They just started up Joel Osteen Radio on SiriusXM and I have been listening and I think there is a lot a Catholic can take from Mr. Osteen.

What say you?

Sorry to bring up such an old thread.

I’ve been listening to Osteen lately as well on XM.
He sounds like a motivational speaker, a get rich quick kind of sound.
But…

Sometimes his talks work and I enjoy them.
Sometimes I can relate to what he is saying it helps me out.
I don’t mind his radio show.
