Joel Osteen ????

I have a question and just wanteed some opinions on this. Joel Osteen visited our town on his tour and my mom was so upset she missed him. She and many people I know watch him on TV all the time. None of them are catholic, does that make a difference cause I don’t really get the big deal about him. I mean I’ve listened to what he said before but I find him to be a motivational speaker more than anything. I
 
I’m not Catholic and I don’t like Joel Osteen.

Some Protestants like him and some do not. Also, I know many Catholics that like him and many do not.

Who is Joel Osteen? I thought I was up on contemporary things…especially in NYC, and I never heard of him!
 
He is motivational, but I find some problems with him theologically. He adheres to the gospel of prosperity, which is based on the idea that God will reward good lives with material wealth and that he wants us to have wealth. Now this idea is seen in the old testament, but Jesus calls us in the gospels to give up everything to follow him. Wealth is not inherently evil, but in emphasizing it in ministry, it can lead to confusion, improper priorities, and it can lead us away from Christ.

Since God alone suffices, the gospel of prosperity adds nothing to our salvation or relationship with God, and can be misleading.

I don’t think most people who teach or adhere to it are “evil”, but I think many of them are misguided in regards to wealth and stewardship, especially in light of our part of a Christian community and as people who hunger and thirst for righteousness.
 
Osteen is only a motivational speaker, and not a Christian one. His messages omit mention of Jesus Christ. In fact, he is ashamed of the Gospel. He never references the Bible. When asked why there was no cross on his “altar”, Osteen replied that some in his audience might find the imagery disturbing. One of the people Osteen said that he would most love to meet is Barack Obama, he proclaimed in 2008. He is a creature of the “New Age”, only mildly influenced by Christian traditions. 🤷 Rob
 
He comes off fake and shallow to me…like his permenant happy smile is plastered on, seriously NO ONE smiles that much in real life. Also I think if they turned off the lights his teeth would glow.

I would NOT call Osteen “New Age,” (and I say that as somone who used to be New Age, so I know what a New Ager is all about) but I agree with the rest of your post----basically. He tends to almost exclusively focus on God----very little Jesus. And he is more of a Chritian motivational speaker than a true pastor-----God is your buddy, your financial manager, your family therapist, your life coach, your inspirational muse----you get the idea. God wants everybody to be rich, succesful, healthy, and to feel as little pain as possible. Also, God loves everybody unconditionally and VERY FEW people are going to Hell. I know of some atheists that are comfortable with him than with other more “orthodox, traditional” pastors.
That should tell you enough about him.
 
Joel speaks very little of what happens if you fall short of grace. Happiness is kool and all but if you do not follow what Christ says darkness will befall you!
 
Due to the feeding frenzy seen on the Father Corapi threads, I’ve become weary of public piling-on.

If this sort of bashing behavior was my only contact with Catholicism I’d have hesitated to enter RCIA.
 
Saw him one time on TV and he quoted a Bible verse and it appeared on the screen. It was probably in reference to achieving your dream life or something but anyway, what was on the screen was nothing like what the verse actually said. It wasn’t just a different translation but a different meaning altogether. It was really strange.
 
Too much Joel Osteen on this forum in my opinion I feel that puzzleannie advice concerning John Corap i was good We need to do the same thing and stop the threads about Joel Osteen.
 
I also listen to and enjoy Joyce Meyer, John Hagee, and others.

I’m beginning to think it’s Catholics I don’t enjoy. 😉

LOL- I admit to still watching Joyce Meyer even though I am coming into the Church through RCIA this year. Actually it was a Joyce Meyer saying which helped me finally make the leap from my Methodist faith. She always says that if you think something is from the Holy Spirit, try it and if it doesn’t work then you know but it was still worth the try. So I started attending Mass last Spring and called the Deacon about RCIA to get my feet wet and see if I really wanted to do this and so far so good! And I was on the fence and driving my lapsed Catholic husband crazy all Lent about what to do so I guess he should be thankful to her too as it was a daily topic of conversation-LOL! As for Joel- I think for “little baby” Christians his positive take on things is fine but there are only so many times you can listen to him and not hear the same things over and over. But I disagree about not talking about Jesus- he ends every show with basically an invitation to accept Jesus into your heart to get saved and get into a Bible believing church. As a Methodist turning Catholic I would never turn to the TV folks for doctrine or theological questions but for encouragement sometimes they hit the spot.
