No, I was raised in the Catholic church and left in my teen years to attend Protestant churches after I was ‘saved’.** I can honestly say that my exposure to Protestantism renewed my faith in the Catholic Church. **Joel Osteen is part of the ‘Word of Faith’ Christian movement. They believe that if you proclaim something in G-d’s name G-d will bless you with it. If you want a new job G-d will give it to you, if you need a better paying job just claim it and G-d will give it to you. According to people like Osteen there is no suffering for the ‘true believers’. Now they don’t come right out and say it, but do some research on ‘Word of Faith’ Christianity then read some of Kenneth Copeland’s and Osteen’s books and you will understand what they are really doing.
All I know is that so far in my life I have had it much better then my Savior did, but who knows what tomorrow will bring.
Tell me honestly how your faith in the Catholic Church was renewed.

i happened to watch the Oprah interview with Joel Osteen a couple of weeks ago. i found him rather shallow. he said that the lifestyle he has is from the books he has written and he doesn’t take any money from the church. he seems like a nice guy who wants to help people feel good about themselves, but i am not sure it parallels with Christianity.
i think the people who attend his church are looking for a place to belong and to be entertained in a way. they must be getting something out of going. he is a motivational speaker from the way it looks to me, rather than a pastor.
for someone who is in RCIA - i would recommend they stick to books and tv on the Catholic church and history. i think in the Oprah interview it was brought up that Joel Osteen doesn’t even mention Jesus in his sermons.

Ok, well I need to say one thing. (or a couple)

i read about Joel Osteen and his preaching style, here, so I decided to take the advice, and really just avoid him. Although he is BIG here in Texas.

Anyway, On my way to Mass, there he was on my radio station. So I listened. I did like what I heard, so here was the message: (keep in mind I have some health issues)

Basically prayer is great, wonderful, never stop. However,if you think God is just going to hand you a fix, or take the problem away cause you prayed, well think again. Are you depressed? Find a way to change your thinking. Do you need to lose weight? Exercise, eat better.

In other words, get up and participate in your own well being. It make sense to me.

That said, I think that was 5 minutes of one sermon that perhaps I needed to hear. The people on this board are very knowledgeable and I think they will give you excellent advice that I intend to listen to.

I absolutely love the Catholic Church and would not consider going elsewhere.

If it was not Joel Osteen I may never have returned to the Catholic Church. He really got me excited about the Bible. Of course the Bible led me to the Catholic Church. I realized a big part of Christianity was missing in his sermons.

As much as I am grateful to him for putting me on the path to Catholicism I would not recommend any Catholic watch him since it is an incomplete Christianity. Anyway, there are so many good Catholic speakers (clergy, religious, and lay) out there that I cannot see any need to waste your time.

Additionally, something that really turned me off was the rest of the “worship service”. There was a lot of cheesy music which is odd since there is so much good Protestant worship music available.

The music? Don’t they have Israel Houghton and the New Breed when he is in town. Mary Radcliff most other times and even Martha Munizzi as a sub during sister Mary’s maternity leave.

I guess I just don’t really like contemporary Christian music. I like the kind of Gospel music Elvis use to sing, i.e. There Will Be Peace in the Valley.

The New Breed is probably the number one template Praise Team for an multiethnic church playing modern music. They are the fusion point between CCM playing churches using Hillsongs as a guide and Urban Gospel playing churches using Marvin Sapp or Fred Hammond as their guide.

While Chris Tomlin songs may cross the racial divide it is Israel Houghton’s and Lakeside Church’s style which does.

I think as a Protestant it could be harmful to watch him on TV!
I completely agree. I once watched 15 minutes of one of his services online to get a sense of his preaching and he is truly a teacher of the “Prosperity Gospel” which is very dangerous, especially for very young Christians with a possibly limited understanding/working knowledge of scripture (but in truth, it is dangerous for most if not all Christians to have extended exposure to this teaching). The rest of my knowledge of his teaching comes from research on his websites. He is very persuasive. This is particularly dangerous because he knows how to take scripture and misconstrue it and if we find that we may agree with one thing or other, it may be easier to slip into agreeing with other things he is teaching. Be wary of anyone that preaches by reducing focus on Christ. There are a few publishers that typically work with reliable and Christ-centered authors which is one easy way to perform a superficial assessment of a books credibility. Other than that, make sure you have a strong mentor who will be willing to help you make informed decisions about books or at least provide resources for you.

I don’t recall ever hearing Joel ask for money let alone saying people will be blessed if they do so. He doesn’t even take a salary.
Doesn’t take a salary? Did he win the lottery, then, because he lives in a mansion.

I am also a bit worried about Joel Osteen’s message. But I know several Catholics who think he is great, and listen to him weekly.

More like CONFUSE yourself with the above. Why would you risk going down the wrong path as a CATHOLIC, with all of these Protestant preachers? I have listened to Christian radio on and off for years now, and in almost EVERY sermon, you will hear bits and pieces of anti-Catholic statements, and mistakes of every kind. She will hear Sola Scriptura and End Times and “saved by faith not works.” Those things are difficult to sort out when you don’t have a thorough grounding in the Truth.

A catechumen needs these like a hole in the head. She needs to stick to EWTN ONLY if she wants to watch any religious TV.
Not only that, but I have heard Christian preachers on the radio say flat out that Catholics aren’t going to heaven.

If you are concerned with danger and you then suggest looking for authors there is no guideline other than yourself…I suggest that you look for the Impramatur that designates that whatever is written does not deviate from revealed Faith…eliminates all the concerns and dangers…👍

Joel Osteen would probably cringe to hear this. I heard him once say that people should connect with a “Bible-based church”. And we all know what that means.

So are you a Catholic, or just a generic Christian?

Name it and claim it, eh? Where is the mention of sin, of suffering? I detest Osteen and every slick practitioner like him. He misleads people every day.

It doesn’t matter if he takes a salary. The services are just marketing messages for his books and believe me, he makes a bundle on books.

way would you want to watch a false prophet. just stick with the CAtholic stuff since you are in RCIA.

he is a false prophet and teaches heresy. It may sound and look good and even make you feel good but after leaving a charismatic church that heavily taught that stuff, he and the rest of the word of faith health/wealth bunch should be avoided at all costs. stick with solid Catholic teaching while you are in RCIA and beyond. you don’t need to eat garbage when you can eat real spiritual food and grow in real faith.
God bless you on your journey

You don’t hear him ask for money when the cameras are on. There is not just one safe at Lakewood but many.
Dear Friend,

That is true.

Further, Joel and his family live in a mansion that is worth 10.5 million dollars. His book sales have reached $3,000.000. And I bet he owns a plane. Just guessing.

Never went to Bible training or Seminary School or college.

Osteen’s preaching is liken to a concept from the occult world. Unfortunately Osteen’s message is far more dangerous that his “cotton candy” preaching and he doesn’t talk about sin. He talks about prosperity and wealth. (News).

Like others said> “RUUUUUNNNNN!”. And I say believe in the teachings of the true Church and what God actually says in Scripture. Oh and continue your classes. If you’re going to be a Catholic, you should study Catholicism. 🙂

One more thing, our local Priests aren’t wealthy at all and some live meager and have small Parishes. And they are well with it. I don’t think Joel Osteen would not like living that way. Well, he doesn’t.

Some pictures are of other things and people but you will be able to tell which is his home. When you see a thumbnail of his click on it to get a better look.

Love ya’ll,
Sheila

I have always been concerned with his idea that God owes us something…

I’ve seen bits and pieces of him on TV and I have to say stay away. His teachings are not at all in line with what you will be learning in RCIA. Like many others have said, you have 2000 years of things to read 🙂 His preaching, in my opinion, is just a feel good message…like a motivational speaker! You will find much better messages, true messages in a homily. Good luck in your journey 🙂
