What are his core teachings? I have heard him talk a few times but he never really spoke much of Christian beliefs or doctrines.
He motivates people and helps them to feel good about themselves.

He doesn’t talk about such things as picking up one’s cross and following Jesus; or about the value of sufferings when we unite them to Christ’s sufferings. (dying to self).

The goal of a Catholic is to grow in the grace Christ purchased for us, thus bringing Him to the world. We do this by prayer, sacraments.

Sounds like he is a motivational speaker, like Anthony Robbins…🤷

Im curious as to what other Catholics think about Joel Osteen. Im sure hes a good person and all but the community Im in loves him. They even quote his bible prayer everyday. ( At the moment im in a Christian program - however, it is a pentecostal Christian program. < I don’t want to say anything bad about it because it was a stepping stone that reconnected me with God. However, it also reconnected me with my Catholic Faith < Their ways opened my eyes to see what was true and what is false. They seem to idolize these millionaire pastors who profit from the word, but denounce the priests and nuns who live only for God - don’t indulge in worldly pleasures (Note: of course there are corruptions in every faith) But the “real” preists and nuns who made a solemn vow to the Lord and aren’t paid millions of dollars.

joel olsteen, joyc meyers etc…motivational speakers…I’m just more concerned that there are people who give these people sitting in the building handing money to them…then again it’s to understand how many people just want to feel good…

First I want to say I find Joel Osteen a rather boring fellow and I do not understandhis appeal to the thousands who attend his church.

however

there is not a thing sinful about wanting to make money-even if it means you run a mega church which it would seem to be rather difficult and write books is okay too- and to listen to a Christian man helping you feel good about yourself.

Seems to me having money and feeling good about yourself is a pretty good road to be on if you want to help others. Whereas, there is no glory in being poor and thinking you are the scum .Being poor or rich has nothing to do with character.

Why assume anyone, be it Olsen or jakes or hagee or whoever is not humble and prayfully thankful to God for the talents given to them ?? It is just as judgemental as some people who see the richness in some cathedrals and easy lifestyles of some of the bishops/cardinals of the catholic Church.

I do not assume this of anyone until proven factually different and I love beautiful cathedrals.

I haven’t participate in the discussion here because IMO Joel Osteen preaches a false gospel or at most a small part if not insignificant part. This based only channel surfing:D. He reminds me of that guy on TV who “preached” wealth with no-money down buying Real Estate…I watched him a wee bit more than channel surfing though:o

It seems to me that Joel Osteen and Pope Francis have a much different message. I wonder what God thinks about their style and message. Which one preaches more like Jesus did ??

I think that you are right. I also think that his philosophy is very American centered. I don’t hink that many Europeans would understand his message. They may have a different mindset about life one more centered in less materialism and one less focused on spiritual personal motivation.

I have never really listened to Joel Osteen at all but two days ago a lady came over to my house and shared with me that she listened to him. It’s a long story, but life is a struggle for this lady, she works very long hours to make financial ends meet (she’s Lutheran although not frequently attending church).

So tonight I felt compelled listened to the attached video for 10 minutes on youtube untl I got a feel for Osteens misguided message Link here.

Short summary below

Today’s Message IS…"Releasing the Full You"
  • He starts early by referencing Romans 12:2 saying that God can release the potential that is in you! One thing that is very telling here is that he does not quote ALL of Romans 12:2, only the bolded text, omitting the second part of the sentence on following the will of God
2 Do not be conformed to this world[a] but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.**
  • using only half of Romans 12:2, he than makes the analogy that we are like a caterpillar in a cocoon, waiting to be turned into a butterly that will “fly”… God “transforms” us … by turning our thoughts from negative to positive …
  • Our thoughts are focused on the negative…example: I’ll never rise much higher at work…
  • God blesses us with material wealth…changing our lives by making us successful
  • “God will give us the victorious life that we desire”
  • “God knows how to get you where you are suppose to be”
  • “You put him first, he will make your dreams come true”
That’s in the first 5-10 minutes. It’s 30 minutes long.

I thought it was very disturbing to listen to him. I’m thinking of passing along a couple of Matthew Kelly CD’s to my new found friend (she has a 30 minute card ride to work everyday).

Thoughts?**

My thoughts are that Joel Osteen does not preach the true Gospel.

Has anyone heard him say that we should pick up our cross and follow Jesus? Or that we should grow in sanctity and become holier?

I’ve watched a few of his sermons to try and figure out what he’s all about, and I didn’t like what I saw. Honestly, I think he’s the head of a cult, and if he ever decided to bring out the Koolaid, there would be plenty of people in that arena to drink up.

That was my impression as well. From the sermons that I have heard Mr. Osteen give, it very much seems like the “Wealth and Health” Gospel message. That God’s Blessing will often take the form of material blessings.

And he seems rather in the morally relative spectrum as well.

Christ’s own words leads me to believe he would soundly disagree with this.

There is much glory in being poor and faithful.

PROVERBS 15:16
Better to have little, with fear for the LORD, than to have great treasure and inner turmoil.

It’s one thing to have money. It is another to hoard and serve money.

Luke 12

The Parable of the Rich Fool

13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”

14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’

18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’

20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’

21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”

Matt 19

The Rich and the Kingdom of God

16 Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?”

17 “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”

18 “Which ones?” he inquired.

Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,’[c] and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’[d]”

20 “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”

21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”

26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

27 Peter answered him, “We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?”

28 Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife[e] or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.
