I was wondering about St Joesph, I have heard from other people he had children before Jesus. Had been married before too. My mother told me he was chaste, that feels right.

There is nothing in the bible to say that Saint Joseph was ever married before or that he had children.
There are no other legitimate or reliable sources than the bible for information about the holy family.
God bless you

You may believe either one-- that he was a widower or that he never married prior to Mary.

But, remember, we are all called to be chaste. Married people are called to chastity in their state in life just as singles are. Chaste doesn’t mean abstinent from sexual relations.

Celibate is the word that means forgoing marriage, and remaining sexually continent.

You are right of course. Thank you…I was thinking of false gospels that exist as not being true sources…a little too tunnel-focused this morning!

The best thing we know about St Joseph is that he is now protector of the Church and is the most chaste Spouse of Mary. And is referred to as Marys most chaste spouse, in the Litany of the Eucharist prayers.

St Joseph is a wonderful Saint to pray to for family needs.

Though we have no definite record as to whether or not Joseph had been married prior, such a marriage would not preclude him from living chastely.

Chastity is about appropriate behavior according to one’s circumstances. Nothing would be inappropriate about a married man having children, or a widower with children remarrying.

True. I suspect the rumor that Joseph was a widower started because people had a hard time accepting his living a celibate marriage with Mary, so they assumed he was older (and perhaps had previous children) to account for it. I don’t think that’s necessarily true, although it is thought he might have been somewhat older as he passed away before Jesus’ death and resurrection.
