No, my question is why should they ask, once they heard what Jesus said (that means now, after the explanations)? Jesus told them He goes to the Father, and He is the way. The Apostles heard that.

John 14:5 if read with the previous chapter 13, He Christ is referring to The Way of The Cross. That His life will ultimately be smitten. The Disciples will follow and be dead as well except for John who died of old age.

That’s the thing. Jesus already said where he goes, and why he goes away.

essentially the Disciples don’t quite get the idea of the resurrection and the presence of the Holy Spirit to come. Both of these events to come are hard concepts to understand. Don’t you blame them! The idea of a man coming back to life and then A Holy Spirit to follow is a lot for anyone to take in. At that moments most likely the Disciples were confused about all things Christ was saying to them at the Las Supper
