Be cautious in advice from those proclaiming discernment and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Too often, our imaginations and emotions can lead to erroneous results. St. John of the Cross wrote extensively on this subject and warned the faithful to pay little attention to those supernatural communications. Instead,we are to cling to Scripture and the teachings of the Church. For those interested, Fr, Thomas Dubay’s book “Authenticity: A Biblical Theology of Discernment” is wonderful.

Thank you, your reply is indeed timely. I am having such a difficult time this very day with the very person I mentioned and who prompted this post. The Holy Spirit guiding my friend is advising him that most of what I say is wrong, since I’m Catholic, and in particular today has been a difficult day for me. I’m so frustrated.

The reason I created this post was to find suggestions I can present as possibilities, to begin some sort of dialogue beginning with the presupposition that since Jesus is the way to the Father (which my Christian friends accept) maybe I can use a parallel demonstrating a similar process that is the way to Jesus. My hope is that I can demonstrate the many ways to Jesus so that rather that outright rejection of all things (literally) Catholic, I can begin to plant a seed.

My non catholics friends believe that through the Holy Spirit they can go ‘directly’ to Jesus, bypassing any other means such as church. This however denies scripture where Jesus said he would build a church and found it upon the rock (Peter), and it also denies apostolic succession.

Is there 'only one ‘way to Jesus’ in the sense that Jesus is the only way to the Father?
Is it only through the church Jesus said he would build, and through apostolic succession, or does our Lord allow simple direct communication (without going through church or man made traditions) as my non catholic friends believe?

That is right. The real fruits of the Holy Spirit is in our actions, living the Gospel. The majority of these private revelations, good or bad intentioned, are most likely derived from our own wills, egos, and biases.
