John 14:6
Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition (DRA)
6Jesus saith to him: I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man cometh to the Father, but by me.

need some help understanding what this verse pertains to what is Jesus talking about in this verse posted a prayer asking our Holy Mother to pray for me on Facebook and someone threw this verse at me

I think the verse is pretty self-explanatory. It kinda goes along with what Paul said in 1Tim 2:5:
For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus
These verses help establish that Jesus is the ONLY mediator between us and God. NOBODY else can fulfill this position. Not even the greatest Saint in heaven (who would be the Blessed Mother). The ONLY way to the Father is through the Son.

This person is using this verse to try to confuse you into believing that St. Mary cannot “mediate” for you, or assist you in your spiritual journey (because she is not Jesus). Therefore, it is folly for you to seek her prayers.

This is the typical protestant objection to the Communion of Saints in general. Yet, it is no different, in principle, than if you had asked your mother or your friend (or the people on Facebook) to pray for you. Protestants ask people to pray for them all the time. This is a form of mediation, but the prayers are still directed to Jesus. So, while Jesus is the ultimate mediator, many people may petition him for the same intention, on behalf of other people. This does not diminish Jesus’ role as mediator - in fact, it magnifies it.

Protestants believe that the Saints in heaven have no awareness of those still on earth, and are unable to pray on our behalf. They believe the living can pray for the living, but the Saints cannot pray for us because they’re “dead.” Catholics do not believe in the death of the Spirit, and we believe those in heaven are even more closely united with the Body of Christ than anyone on earth, and they are thus able to perceive us and pray on our behalf, just as we on earth can do for each other.

Christians on earth are part of the mystical Body of Christ. It is the SAME Body that those in heaven are joined to (in the most perfect way). There is not one Body for those on earth, and a completely different Body for those in heaven.

It’s important to know what is meant by Jesus mediation as opposed to all other subordinate mediation. Only the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus provides a sacrifice by man that has the necessary “infinite” value to provide redemption, propitiation, and atonement for the sins of man. Jesus is both God and man and can, therefore, be the champion of man in providing an infinite sacrifice to our infinite God. No mere man could do that. Only the sacrifice of Jesus provides what is needed, and that is why Jesus is referred to as the “sole mediator” between God and man.

Notice that Catholic teaching on intercessory prayer and all other forms of mediation by angels, saints, and those on earth are subordinate and dependent upon Jesus. Catholics do not mix or confuse the mediation of Jesus with that of men, angels, or saints.

God bless.

Paul asked other saints in the body of Christ to pray for him all the time ((Rm 15:30, Col 4:3, 1 Thes 5:25, 2 Thes 3:1, etc…). So is he not aware that Jesus is the only mediator? As the others have said, they are applying the scope of Jesus’ mediation incorrectly to asking other members of the body for intercessory prayer. Just tell your friend you are following Paul’s example. They will either have to concede or start moving the goal posts like “well those are dead people” and then you can refute that, etc…etc… Here’s some stuff that may help if it gets to that.

A lot of people show up on those Virgin Mary sites on FB to discourage everyone from invoking Mary to pray for them. They don’t believe in Praying for help from our Mother of Mercy and constantly try to discourage the practice because they don’t recognize Mary or Saints as intercessors to God/Jesus.Most people just ignore them as its almost impossible to get them to understand.

The entire first half of John 14 is Jesus telling the disciples that he is God.

*Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. (John 14:1)

If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” (John 14:7)

**Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. *(John 16:9)

God is the way, and the truth, and life. Jesus is telling us that he is God. This has nothing to do with Mary our Queen, her mediation of grace, or her intercessory prayer.

Have you been to these Facebook sites? - he said this passage as a way of chastising the poster for praying to the Virgin Mary basically saying that he should not pray to her but only to Jesus in few words as always happens at these FB sites by those who believe that only Jesus should be prayed to.These people post it constantly as I said to discourage praying for help or in thanking to Blessed Mother at these FB sites.I know this from going to this these sites and if you don’t believe me go look for your self.I am simply explaining why he or she said this and what his or her intent was - not what the passage means.
