John 16:12 - what did Jesus mean?

In my opinion, he was telling us that the information we are given (the bible and other books) are just a very small part of a much larger puzzle, and we, as humans, cannot comprehend the ‘big picture’.

I have a feeling when we die, and we are able to understand all this, it will be a major eye opener, we will recognize how simple it all is, and wonder how we could have missed this during our lives. I think the majority of this information probably relates to ‘what’ God actually is, I mean, we know he is the creator of everything, but id say there is MUCH MUCH more to him (and the universe as a whole) than we think.
I think you are getting closer to the truth here. There is much, much more to be known about religion and God than has been revealed to us yet. Jesus just told us about the things he thought we could handle.

Our knowledge about God and our relationship with Him and His world is pretty primitive. We know as little about this stuff, as we knew about science a few centuries ago, I am not sure we are ready even now to learn everything Jesus could have told us.

I believe, the Christ will be back soon, maybe in less than a couple of years. Some of the new information, he will reveal may shock those who are not ready to hear it. Pretty much like relativistic quantum mechanics shocked those who thought that the newtonian view was all there was to the physical world.

Could the answer to your question be as simple as: Rarely does The Lord ever grant us full and complete understanding about…anything? We assume we will have greater understanding in Heaven, but even then and there we are not God. Why does a child ‘have to’ develop cancer? We assume (correctly imho) that God has a greater design beyond the disease. Why Hitler? What about a fatal car crash? The riots in Baltimorean? And on and on and on. There are many things being revealed to us, many signs all around us, and still more things that we have yet to bear (understand). I suspect that Jesus is providing the Apostles, as leaders of The Church, that we can share the Gospel without understanding everything He is doing. Humbly, there is still much to bear, Jesus still has more to teach, but we aren’t as ready as we think we are.
Great question!

Peace in Christ
