“26
On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you.”

My brother who is an evangelical pastor asked me what this verse meant. I have some thoughts on it but I don’t know what Jesus is saying here. Any takers?

Hi Stan,

Just read the verse and surrounding verses so I will venture a guess, take it with a grain of salt.

Jesus doesn’t want to be a Middle Man…? I told you take it with a grain of salt!

Jesus is saying that we will ask the Father in Jesus’ Name rather than asking Jesus to ask the Father on our behalf. In other words we are to go to God the Father and ask Him directly for something in the Name of Jesus rather than ask Jesus to ask Him for us. That we’re not to be afraid to go straight to Him because He loves us because we love Jesus.

With Mary, the Angels and Saints, we ask them to pray for us and that is fine, but with Jesus, He doesn’t want us to ask Him to pray for us, but for us to pray directly to the Father in Jesus’ Name.

I believe it has to do with Christ’s distinction of what is being asked for. While He is with them, for a time, they are asking questions. These He answers. But in 16:26, He reveals that when He is gone and the Holy Spirit comes upon them, questions like those previously asked will not be answered. This is distinct from petitions, or prayers. Those are still answered, taken to the Father. But their intellectual, theoretical questions are no longer answered directly by Christ, nor The Father. But rather, through the promised Paraclete (Holy Spirit). Don’t quote me on this, but this is my understanding.

God Bless

I think you both make good points. As for this:
Jesus is saying that we will ask the Father in Jesus’ Name rather than asking Jesus to ask the Father on our behalf. In other words we are to go to God the Father and ask Him directly for something in the Name of Jesus rather than ask Jesus to ask Him for us.
Our Father, who art in Heaven…

Thanks to you all. That is what I was thinking, but my brother is saying that since Jesus isn’t our intecessor, then my brother’s interpretation is that we don’t need anyone to be our intecessor. Apologetics is not my strong point. Thanks for the answers.

16 A little while, and now you shall not see me; and again a little while, and you shall see me: because I go to the Father.

Ver. 26-27. In that day … I say not to you that I will ask the Father for you, or shall need to ask the Father for you, though I am your Redeemer, your chief Advocate and Mediator, by dying for all the world. — For the Father himself loveth you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came forth from God, sent to be your Redeemer. — I came forth from the Father, both as begotten of him from all eternity; and I also came into the world, as sent from him to become man, to become the Redeemer of the world, both as God and man. Now I am going, as man, to leave the world, and go to the Father, with whom I am, and have always been, as God. (Witham)

**(KJV) John 16:26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:

“At that day” refers to the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit will lead them to all truth pertaining to Christ. Jesus is saying, at that time in that hour on that day when the Spirit comes then you’ll know all of these things simply, because we’ll begin to clarify all the mystery.

Jesus will be at the right hand of the Father and they/we can ask in His Name; before that they went to Jesus; now they will go to the Father directly in His name.**

Jesus is the one mediator between God and man - because none of us could have stood in his place as the perfect sin offering. ONLY Jesus could do that.

However - we are called upon to offer intercessory prayer for one another (James 5:16). Does your brother ever pray for anyone or ask anyone to pray for him or any other intention? If he does, then guess what? He’s asking people to be mediators - intercessors on his behalf.

We can and should pray for each other but that doesn’t mean that we can redeem the world through our death. Like I said - only Jesus can - and DID.

I hope that helps.
