John 19 vs 27

If we look at instruction given by Jesus to the disciple, we see we should behold our Mother.

Who is the disciple? Is this pronoun (not a personal noun), naming the true disciple of Jesus as well as John (who is also a true disciple)?

My understanding is that John never referred to himself in his Gospel by name. Always as the one Jesus loved.

Of course you bring up a good point here in that Jesus loved all of His disciples - and He loves all of us - who try to be true disciples…

I hadn’t really looked at it that way…I’ve always just read it as being John…thanks for causing me to think anew…

The Transfiguration preceded the instruction by Jesus. The Transfiguration was witnessed by Elijah and Moses.

The Beloved Deciple

The Deciple who stayed with Jesus and mother Mary at the Cross [John 19:26-27]

So, if we want to be a beloved disciple, we should behold Jesus’s mother. John’s gospel also is the only one which mentions Miracle at Cana.

So, we get extra instruction regarding Mary in John’s Gospel.

This is how we use John to defend prayer to Mary.

What I find truly intriguing about Christ’s words from the cross is that this urgent directive is given first to Mary - she must now be a mother to John. Then He tells John to look upon Mary as his mother. “Mother, please take care of him as you would Me. John, listen to you new mother.”

Both sets of instructions are to the disciples. The first instruction had a priori authority.

Jesus DID NOT say “mother” or “Mary” but used the term for ALL WOMEN… “Women!” behold your son… this is Christ COMMANDING His Mother to become the Mother of all humanity, a position She accepts in humility and complete Obedience.

By calling John the “deciple” Christ is refurring to each of us and what He calls us to be: His deciples.

John is charged by Christ to take care of Mary, Christ Mother as she is a widow and now childless in human terms; BUT the Mother of humanity in God’s Plan for our salvation.

You have completely missed my point. The thrust is not that John is charged with taking care of Mary, but that Mary, the Messianic woman of Genesis, is charged with taking care of John (and the rest of His disciples). The Greek does not say that he took her into his own home, only that he took her into his own … life!. as justifiable as as home.
