John 2:24, Love does not presuppose Trust?

Considering that Jesus say that he does not turn away anyone who comes to him (John 6:37) but he does not in general entrust himself to anyone (John 2:24), do you understand this as loving others does not require to trust them in the first place?

Are we also called to not put our trust in man? But we still need to love our neighbors right? So love does not presupposed trust?

I am confused.

“In general” is reading something into it that isn’t there. In context, it is referencing a group of people in Galilee who had heard Jesus and said they believed Him.

Jn 2:24-25 is more inline with Matt 7:21-23. God knows the hearts of all people.

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven,* but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.n

Many will say to me on that day,o ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not drive out demons in your name? Did we not do mighty deeds in your name?’p

Then I will declare to them solemnly, ‘I never knew you.* Depart from me, you evildoers.’

But to answer your question, do you have to trust in order to love? Trust is placed in God. God doesn’t require that we trust others in order that we love them. Prudence is a virtue.

Not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for but…
To me - we must begin from the position of Love (Agape) as we love ourselves - and such love must necessarily include trust…Thus we begin from a position of Love and trust…until (or if) that trust is betrayed.
At such point we must continue to love, but such love must also include the element of “penance” on the the part of the betrayer. That is, the person who has betrayed our trust, must be willing to accept that they must rebuild said trust - just as WE must recognize in ourselves, our relations with others, and with God, that when we sin, we must seek to restore and rebuild trust.

Of course with the many variations and permutations, all the “yea but what if’s”, possible the above it can all become very complicated…:whacky::hypno:
So the best we can do is to recognize where should (ideally) start from, our own weaknesses in these areas (to love and to trust), God’s mercy and willingness to help us to grow and then to move forward as best we can.

I love my children but am wise enough to know they can’t be trusted in many things-not yet anyway.

But to answer your question, do you have to trust in order to love? Trust is placed in God. God doesn’t require that we trust others in order that we love them. Prudence is a virtue.
